What does it do?
While someone is “Marked For Death”, ALL damage they take becomes mini-crits. A player who is marked will have a white skull and crossbones above their head…
(This skull & crossbones will be above the head of someone who is marked.) So if you see an enemy with that above their head, you really need to pounce on them, as all damage you deal will mini-crit them.
Marked For Death can not be removed as easily as most other debuffs… getting healed by a Medic or Dispenser won’t even remove it. The only way to become “unmarked” is by touching a resupply cabinet, or by simply waiting until it runs out.
How to know if you’re marked
If you’re Marked For Death, a flashing red skull will be shown above your health. Here are two images of what it looks like…
So while this skull is above your health, any damage you receive will mini-crit you.
“Marked For Death” Weapons
Here are all of the weapons in TF2 that can be affected by the Marked For Death mechanic…
The Fan O’War
The Escape Plan
The Rescue Ranger
(MvM only) The Sandman
First let’s break down The Fan O’War… If you hit an enemy with the Fan O’War, it applies the Marked For Death debuff to them, and all damage they take will be mini-crits for the next 15 seconds. However, you can only mark one enemy for death at a time.
The Escape Plan… This weapon is pretty unique because it applies the Marked For Death debuff to yourself. Whenever you unholster the Escape Plan and pull it out, it marks you for death for as long as you keep the weapon deployed. But when you holster the weapon, the Marked For Death effect goes away after 3 seconds.
The Rescue Ranger… This shotgun for the Engie self-marks you for death whenever you are hauling a building. So for example, if you pick up your Sentry Gun to move it somewhere else, you will be Marked For Death the whole time you’re carrying it. When you’re done moving the building and put it down, the Marked For Death debuff will stay on you for 3 seconds and then go away.
(In MvM mode only) The Sandman… In Mann vs. Machine mode the Sandman can be upgraded to apply a Marked For Death debuff to any robot that your baseball hits.
Closing Note
Thanks for checking out my guide! It’s pretty short & sweet, but honestly it’s a pretty uncommon/subtle mechanic, so that seems right. You might’ve already known everything in this guide, or you might have learned something new, like how long the Marked For Death effect lasts after you holster the Escape Plan. But anyway, thanks again. Feel free to rate/favorite/follow to see more TF2 guides like this in the future. 😀
