This short guide is aimed at players who are familiar with all nine classes in the game and have played Payload gamemode before. This is not advice on how to aim nor is it about something special, rather it is something simple yet often overlooked. Keep in mind that the following guide is for Payload game mode, which should not be confused with Payload Race.

Characters React to the Cart

With the exception of Pyro, Engineer and Spies who are already Cloaked/Disguised, all other classes have voice responses related to the Payload cart. How can this be used? Think logically. Who would complain about the cart not being pushed? The BLU team, because it is their objective to push the cart. Who would complain about the cart being pushed? The RED team. Their objective is to stop the cart.

How to Exploit This

If you have played the game for a while you have definitely heard those lines. But have you made use of them? For example, if you hear a Soldier saying “Why is that cart not moving?”, that is effectively telling you there is a BLU Soldier nearby. Only a BLU member would complain about the cart not moving. If you are playing for RED, you now know there is a BLU Soldier somewhere near and you can either prepare for a fight or flee if low on health. As another example, let’s say you are playing for BLU and hear a Spy behind you saying “We must stop the bomb!”. This should make you turn around, as this is a RED Spy. Only a Spy on the RED team would complain about the cart being pushed. So you can actually exploit this to get information about your enemies’ position.

When do the Voice Lines Trigger?

  • If the cart is being pushed, members of the RED team complain about the cart being pushed. The RED Medic says “Everyone! We must stop the bomb!”. If you are playing for BLU and hear this, you now know there is a RED Medic nearby.
  • If the cart stops, members of the BLU team complain about the cart stopping. The BLU Scout will say “What the hell?! Who stopped pushing the cart?!”, revealing his position.
  • If the cart begins to get pushed by some BLU class, they will often say “Push!”, revealing which BLU class is involved in pushing the cart.
  • If the cart starts slowly going in reverse, the RED team will react in a proud way, for example the RED Soldier could say “That’s it men, move that cart back!”, while the BLU

team will start complaining again, such as the BLU Soldier – “Do not let that cart roll back!”

  • If the cart while moving is blocked by a RED member next to it, such as a RED Soldier, he may say “Hold the line, men! Stop that cart!”

Exceptions with Spies

Team Fortress 2 Basic Gameplay and Tips for Payload Game Mode - Exceptions with Spies - BACEF0FDisguised and/or Cloaked Spies, whether BLU or RED, will never say these lines. Both disguising and cloaking take some time before they finish, however. So a Spy goes through the following phases when he wants to disguise and/or cloak:

Not disguised -> Disguising (in progress) -> Disguised (finished)

Not cloaked -> Cloaking (in progress) -> Cloaked (finished)

Spies will never use cart-related voice lines when they FINISHED either disguising or cloaking more than 3 seconds ago. In all other cases, voice responses are possible.

Engaging Enemy Snipers

Sometimes Snipers whisper about the cart and sometimes they speak normally. If you hear a Sniper whispering, there is a high probability they are scoped. You can use this to surprise them and engage them from an angle they are not looking at, as scoped Snipers are much less aware of their surroundings and have tunnel vision – [wikipedia.org] .

Remember that if the Sniper does not see you, you can take advantage of this and silently close the distance (when playing as any class other than Sniper) before attacking in order to gain advantage over them.

Exceptions with RED Demomen

RED Demomen will not complain about the Payload cart unless they are staying next to it while there is a BLU member trying to push it at the same time. They still have all the other voice responses, though.

Conclusion

Said in a simple way, just use your ears when playing the game and you will generally be a much better player not just on Payload, but on any other game mode as well.

Hopefully this guide has helped you.
