Updated breeder Guide after new Event ” You stirred the cauldron ” wiped out our entire boar farm except 2 piglets ( all three breeders where lost) we had to rethink what was needed to protect the farm from a total loss. And this is what my Husband and I came up with.

1st – Easy Taming pit which works for both Boars and Wolfs example given for the wolves

So we tried this and it works like a charm. You will need a Pickax, I also recommend the Megingjord Belt to allow you to carry more weight and you will need the Abyssal Harpoon and we found Sausage links work the best or boar meet for wolf taming Carrots are best for Boars. You also will need to have a stack or two of Wood for the workbench and ramp as well as some core wood to support the ramp. You can do this at the foot of a mountain or anywhere near the top. We happened to find a location where we had located a small damaged Hut on the mountain and a one star wolf spawned near by during the night. One key point, the wolf you are trying to tame has to spawn during the day, night time wolfs will de-spawn when the morning comes if the taming process has not started. We found that out the hard way. We got two one star wolves into the pit at first that was just before dawn and we had forgotten to add the food for the wolves, but when we checked in the morning to feed them a few minutes later the night time wolf had de-spawned and the daytime wolf was still there.

Great news you do not have to take on several wolves you can tame one at a time with this method. One thing to mention, start this just after you had an event, this gives you a few days to get this done so you do not have to deal with an event while catching and taming the wolves.

Find a suitable location where you have seen a one star wolf, we took that one out and the no star wolf and started to dig a hole in the ground as low as you can dig it we made it wide enough to allow for a ramp of 26 degree angle roof pieces fit into the hole all the way to the bottom ( see photo) . For the best support, use core-wood under the ramp. You can also take a few full size floor pieces and add them to the side of the pit wall low enough but just above the wolf high so you can check on their status without them being able to attack. Make sure that the ramp reaches all the way to the bottom so you can remove the wolves after they have been tamed, then remove the bottom 2 roofs so the wolf will not attack the ramp. This is what ours looked like after we removed the wolves.

A few feet above the pit on the mountain side build a small shelter that is big enough to hold a fire and allows for a wolf to be housed while the second wolf is being tamed and where you can spend the night in safety make sure it can be easily defended. Don’t forget to throw a stack or two of meat into the pit. Now your almost set.

The fallowing pic is only to show the relations of the pit to the Hut distance

Make sure you eat a balanced meal, a little higher on the stamina. Mind you, we did this when we already had black metal gear. I recommend at least having Bronze weapons or better yet Iron and you need at least have one item of clothing like the wolf or lux cape, to keep you from freezing Frost resist potion is an option if you do this at the foot of the mountain and use small campfires to keep you from freezing.

You can use the Harpoon and hold a Shield at the same time its best to do this in Co-op but it can be done alone. Wait for the wolf to spawn near the pit, harpoon the wolf you want and drag him down into the pit. Release the harpoon as soon as the wolf is in the pit, then jump on the ramp and and run out or jump up the side of the wall.

I took out any other wolf that had spawned that was not a one star while my husband got the one star wolf into the pit. Go right away up to the nearby shelter ( it will take about 24 in-game hours to tame the wolf) you can protect the area from Dragons and any over night incident. You have to remain in the area for the taming to work. You can sneak down to the pit and hop one one of the floor panels to check the taming progress when its been close to 24 in-game hours.

Once tamed you can replace the 2 bottom roof panels and have the wolf follow you up to the nearby Hut and don’t forget to feed the wolf. ( Rinse and repeat for the second wolf) this way we where sure we get only one star wolves.

Taming done now what???? Now you can either have them fallow you onto a boat and take them to your base or start a breeder in the meadows below the mountain ( if there are any)

The Actual breeder – again works for Boars and wolves, Example given for the wolves.

So as mentioned before there is a new event in Valheim after you enter the Ice cave that is.

So we had watched a few tutorials on how to build a breeder with the recent updates and decides we play around with what we learned and make our own version. Off to the Meadows where we had our lodge we went with two wolves on the boat. Luckily we did not encounter a sea serpent and the ride was rather short.

Next up ( we already had the boar pits done and decided we needed to make a change based on the recent event that wiped out all of our boars except 2 piglets.

you again will need your pickaxe and lots of wood and at least one stack of core-wood and lots of patience as well as your harpoon if you make this for the boars.

So again dig a pit I would say at least 2 large core wood deep and have a small piece of core-wood above the ground. for boars make it 2 and one half core wood deep with the last half above the ground. For boars you can make a pit large enough to where you can add a platform in each corner. I made mine a perfect square in order to make sure everything fits snug.

For wolves since they breed faster we only build one in the center. Stack the core wood and on the very top add a 1 inch horizontal wood beam next you will need four 2×2 floor pieces line the first two up with the edge of the 1 inch one, next add the other two panels to make a square next use the wood half wall and align it at the end of the 1 inch beam in the center so half of it sticks out over the edge. the use 4 full size wall panels to form an “m” shape see the pictures.

In some tutorials they used half walls, but that worked before the new update.

Next add 4 – 1×1 floor panels side by side to the other opposite end which is where your ramp will go. you can add the ramp in the center using 26 decree roof panels or you can use 2 side by side the way we did making it easier to close in the area to keep bats out.

Next have the wolf fallow you up one by one and put him in one of the stalls close it off with a wall piece do the same to the second, their tail end will hang over the opening in the floor and once they have food they will have their heads stick out the wood panel in the front. stand at the edge of the 1×1 and the ramp in the center of the platform facing the wolves aim using the right mouse button to the middle of the panel and of one of the wolves, use ctrl and right click to drop the meat against the fence, with practice it will land perfectly every time. turn your auto pick up off and yes they will start breeding at this point.

Now you have to close everything in. Put a small wood door in the center of the platform right at the edge of the 1×1’s and the ramp. Next use 1×1 wood walls to put on either side. ( it may be easier to center the door if you add the walls first.) add 2 more full walls to either side to close the whole thing in.

Next you will need 4 of the 26 decree wood walls, two to place on the wall with the door and 2 at the opposite wall. I also added 4 inverted 45 decree walls on the underside for stability – see photos (mind you to take better photos I build this above ground)

This will take a lot of wood so be prepared. now add the 26 decree roof panels and add the corners as well since you working from the center toward the edge make sure your support your roof along the way, I use a line of x panels to go around the outside of the pit starting next to the ramp. The I brought the roof down to the x’es to give the roof good stability. and I enclosed the entire pit. I added a set of stairs so I can get the wolves out of the pit.

if you don’t mind the howling you don’t have to feed the wolves in the pit. if you leave the area make sure you pick up the food from the breeders or they will just eat and not breed. As long as you stay near by they will be popping out puppies like rabbits. We have not had another “stir the cauldron” event since, go figure.

Conclusion and extra photos – Reasons behind this and what we found

So why do we build our breeders this way now? Because of the new event.

What exactly is the new event? Well how does about 100 Bats showing up in the middle of the night attacking your livestock sound? They went crazy and took out everything. I was at work so my husband was the only one online and had just walked by the computer when the event started and he said we lost about 100 boars ( 89 adults) in under 2 minutes he managed to protect and save 2 piglets. We had noticed in the Fenris Cave that one or two bats are not bad, but I fell down the stairs and right into a bunch of Bats and yah that was not fun. They are quick so its not like fighting a Deathsceto. They are vulnerable to fire thou. (See the two pics in the rain) We added large fires to hopefully keep the bats under control.

One thing we learned better be save than sorry. Once we had some puppies we made a small kennel inside the pit stuck 2 puppies inside and closed them in roof sidewalls and all so nothing could get to them just in case the Bats make it into the pit or anything else for that matter.

We did have a foul smell event, the 6 wolves out in the open we where about to go roam around with them did protect us but got killed because they don’t have poison resist. luckily the once inside the breeder and in the pit where totally save.

We did the same with our Boar pits. the photo taken at Dawn was what our Pits looked like after the event, but than we noticed if we can hurt a pig through the wall so can a event so we redid the roof to what you see in the photos with the rain.

A second option you can have a food server like I do its also my testing server I have not taken out any bosses to keep the events to the forest is moving. I tested the taming pit out there and then converted it into a breeder pen. No roofs needed other than over the wolves. This is what it looks like. I also got a second breeder once the wolves started breeding. I was unable to locate a one star on that mountain but you can see how many wolves I got.
