This guide will help you see what I consider a good way to progress through Expert difficulty using the Mage Class.

Welcome to my second Terraria Progression Guide. This guide will teach you how to progress in Terraria using the Mage class.
 
 
I'll give it another go, since I got some requests.
 
 
Although I don’t play Mage often, it is still a fun class that offers a variety of weapons. Keep in mind that there are many ways to play the game.
 
 

Notes

 
 
The guide is for players who wish to attempt Expert difficulty
 
Mage can be used more easily if you have the following requirements:
 
 
This Guide will be using a Corruption World.
 
It's going be easier for our Mage Progression.
 
 
The reforges allow you to choose between full damage and full defense. You shouldn't try to balance it. It is better to be focused on one thing.
 
 
Today, I like to choose DMG, but that is because I am good at dodging. For a better chance of staying alive, choose +4 Defense in each accessory.
 
 
 

Early Game (. Pre Bosses -)

Getting Started

 
 
To start, we will need some wood in order to make the Wooden Armor. We can use any weapon at the moment, but I prefer the Wooden Sword until there are more weapons in my chest.
 
Also, make sure to have some houses for your NPCs.
 
 
Wooden Armor offers a Set bonus (+1 defense and). This is useful because Expert mode can easily kill you so it's nice to have extra defense.
 
 
This is how your equipment should look at the beginning.

You can just explore the surface of the planet and equip anything you find, especially if there are modifiers.
 
 

Basic Loadout

 
 
After your first or second day of exploration, you should focus on upgrading your armor/weapon. This is because you are too weak right now. I like to farm for any of the Gem Staves armors and mineral armors like the Iron/Lead Armor and the Gold/Platinum Armor. (While you don't need to farm these armors, it is a good investment for your defense.
 
We also want a Hook to increase our mobility! Any Gem Hook is sufficient.
 
Under your base, you can find all the minerals that you need.
 
 
These are the materials we will need:
 
15 gems – to make a Hook – (They all work for now)

For better armor we need 60 Bars 2 of any Mineral.

Now you can explore your world, fill up your equipment, and find Life Crystals to gain your health. You can also farm Fallen Stars so that you can craft Mana Crystals to maximize the Mana you have!
 
 
 

Bosses of Pre-Hardmode

Now that we have some decent equipment to kill stuff and don’t get destroyed every time we encounter enemies, we can prepare for our first boss: the Eater Of Worlds. Yes, you heard me… the Eye Of Cuthulu is not our first priority, we are rushing to the EOW 😀
 
 
First, we need to get under the corruption and eliminate it.
 
Shadow Orbs – until you get a 21A15124821A
 
If you find a Band of Starpower , keep it! It will be needed later.
 
Bombs are a way to destroy Shadow Orbs. Because we can't mine in corruption. Remember that after 3 orbs, an Eater of Worlds will appear, so you're likely to die.
 
Don't worry if every Orb is destroyed and you don't find Vilethorn. You can always head to the corruption on another side of the world to find more.
 
 
Once you have the Vilethorn, it is a good idea for your armor to be upgraded to the Jungle Armor 22A15125945A
 
You can just head to the Underground Jungle, and farm:

Once you have everything you need, you can finally get on the EoW front.

Note: I won’t be explaining all potions at every boss battle. I don't want this guide to be too long. Please refer to the wiki for more information on potions.
 
 
Once you are ready, craft 2 to 3. This will boost your Health Regen. If you don't know how it is made, go to the caves where the Shadow Orbs were broken. Once you are there, you can summon EoW by using Worm Food and (.

This Boss can be defeated by using avoid the Head, which does more damage. Also, don't try to seperate him in too much. You can defeat him easily if you take your time. If you get caught between his body and your Hook., just use it.
 
 
After defeating EoW you will be given a Treasure Bag and when you open it you'll get a Worm Scarf 2A15123431A that reduces damage taken by 17%
 
You will also find some Demonite Ore & Shadow Scales . Use the Ore for crafting Demonite Bars–. Combine them with the Scales for upgrading your pickaxe to Nightmare Pickaxe–.
 
 

King Slime

You can order the King Slime with the exact same loadout. It should not be difficult.
 
 
We want to wait until a Meteorite is available to land so that we can go and farm this Mineral.
 
You can use your Pickaxe to mine Meteorite and make Meteorite Bars–. We will need 65 bars to make Meteorite Armor– and Space Gun–.
 
The space gun with the Meteorite arm is an amazing combination, as you don't need to have mana in order to use the gun.
 
This combo works well with the Gray Zapinator and . This weapon has a super powerful attack against bosses. The Travelling Merchant will sell it randomly, which is unfortunate. If you're lucky enough to find one of these, buy it and use it in place of the Space Gun.
 
 
Now that you have your Meteor Set we need to look for boots!
 
Any of the following will work as we upgrade them later.

Eye Of Cthulhu

This boss should be very easy with your new equipment. However, we want it to fall for one of my favourite items, Shield of Cthulu 2. This shield will not just give you more defense, but it will also give you a dash! If you can master this dash, it will greatly improve your survival and mobility!

Queen Bee

Another easy boss. This fight should not be too difficult using the Meteor combo.
 
You can make it easier by farming the Hornets to obtain the .
 
Once you're ready, head to the underground Jungle to find a bee hive.

We don't have any item of interest in this fight. We're going to go for Skeletron.
 
Maximize your health, and then organize everything so that you can take the maximum damage or defense.
 
 

Skeletron

Skeletron is most likely going to be the hardest boss of Pre-Hardmode.
 
It's crucial to have a mobility accessory: double jump. There are three options. There are three options.
 
 

 
Cloud in a Bottle : Can be found within the Underground and Cavern levels in Gold Chests.
 

 
Blizzard in a Bottle : is found in Frozen Chests in Ice Biome
 

 
Sandstorm in A Bottle : Only found within the Gold Chests of Pyramids
 
 
These 3 options will work but it would be easier to avoid Skeletron attacks if you could get the Sandstorm or Blizzard.
 
You can also upgrade these items if a Shiny Red Balloon 23A1512802A is found within a Skyware Chest located in the Floating Isles. You can use a Gravitation Potion for scouting the sky to find the Islands. (This is optional, but will increase your jump greatly making the Skeletron fight so easy. I highly recommend this).
 
If you find the Balloon in the Tinkerers Workshop, you can combine it with your double jump items in the Tinkerers Workshop for an upgrade.
 
 
Once you have your double jumping item, go to Dungeon to build the arena (. You will need three long rows of platforms that are separated but not too far. Also, place some heart lanterns and campfires) and fight Skeletron.

Dungeon and Underwold

 
 
Now that we have the Dungeon, we can look for the Magic Missile 2A15124997A (Optional. If you find the Shield you can upgrade it to a Obsidian Shield 2A15125703A Obsidian Skull made with 20 Obsidian. Then combine the Shield and the Skull at Tinkerers Workshop).
 
 
The Magic Missile can be a very useful and fun weapon. You can use it in lieu of the Space Gun with a Mana accessory, such as the one below:
 
 
The Magic Cuffs: Increases maximum mana to 20 and restores it when the wearer becomes injured.

Mana Flower reduces mana use by 8% and auto consumes mana potions from the player's inventory when necessary. (This one I like and I use it most of my time as a mage.

Now you can travel to the Underworld. The Obsidian Shield can be used to avoid fire damage as well as avoid being knocked into the lava. To mine Hellstone 21,A15122501A, you will need Obsidian Skin Potions. You can also upgrade your pickaxe to a 23,A15126271A 21,A15122753A.
 
To upgrade your normal forge, find a Hellforge and use your Shadow Key Shadow Chests (. You will also find good Magic Weapons here.
 
 
We are looking to find the Demon Scythe or weapon.
 
This powerful weapon is our choice to defeat Wall of Flesh. It will take some time to obtain this powerful weapon, which has a 2.8% drop rate from Demons. This is a very powerful weapon.

You will receive the treasure bag once you defeat the WoF. You will find the Pwnhammer 2A15121433A(that can break the Altars of Corruption), and the Demon Heart 2A15127073A (that can increase your Equipment/accessory slots 1!), one of the four Emblems. We want the Sorcerer Emblem 2A15128258A, but it's fine if we don't get it. You can farm it if desired or keep the Emblem to upgrade it later.
 
 
Consume the Demon Heart. Fill your extra accessory slots with the Emblem, Obsidian Shield, and the Magic Cuffs. It's your choice.
 
 

Hard Mode

 
 
Welcome to Hard Mode
 
Are you prepared to die a lot of?
 
Your armor won't do anything, and your weapons won't either, so you'll feel helpless.
 
But don't worry, I got you! We are going to get some stuff for you so that your enemies can't beat you!
 
 
First, you're going to put the Witch Doctor NPC at your Jungle Biome home. The Witch Doctor NPC will then sell you the Leaf Wings Double jump accessory upgrade. You won't be worried about falling damage.

This is why you need a weapon capable of dealing some damage to Hard Mode foes.
 
We have 2 great and easy-to-get guns:
 
 
The Poison Staff 2A1512283A

This weapon is very effective, especially at close range or mid-range, and it's easy for anyone to obtain. To kill spiders through walls, simply go underground and find a Spider Cave. To kill the spiders, you can leave a gap and use your Magic Missile.
 
 
You also have the Crystal Serpent or options
 
This item must be fished within the Hallow Biome. This can be done by crafting a Fisher of Souls with Demonite Bars
 
This weapon also does decent damage. Although it is not as powerful as the Poison Staff it still does a lot of damage when it hits anything. It also has a wider range.
 
 
You decide which one is best for you. Because I get bored fishing, I tend to prefer the Poison Staff. Both weapons can be used.

Next, break some Altars. Continue on to the Hard Mode ore until you have TIER 3.

Mechanical Bosses

The Destroyer

It is very easy to find the strategy to eliminate the first Mech Boss.
 
Find a flat area or make one. You will need to make 3 rows of platforms, with a good separation. For some buffs, you can place some Heart Lanters or Star in a Bottle Lanterns. Also, light up your arena. Make sure to get your potions ready so you can summon the boss with a Mechanical Worm.

"Pro" Tip:
 
To inflict large damage early on in the fight, it is a good idea to open the minimap. Zoom it out. After that, fly upwards for two seconds. Once you are high in air, summon the boss. This will create a spawning location for the Worms in the air. You will see the spot on the mini-map. Fly to that spot, and attack the spawning area. This will allow you inflict significant damage.
 
 
Be careful with the Probes throughout the fight, they can be very dangerous. To destroy this boss, you should fly high if you feel in danger.
 
 

The Twins

You have now defeated the Destroyer and you have access the Hallowed Bars , you will need 54 bars. If you need more bars,) can farm the Destroyer fight.
 
Because of the Holy Protection buff that allows the player to dodge an enemy's next attack, this armor is probably my favorite in the game. This Armor can be used to beat most of the game. However, I will show you some other options. Keep in mind that this Armor can be used for the rest of your playthrough.
 
 
A wing upgrade upgrade is another option.
 
Simply go to the Underground Jungle and kill Moths (. They don't spawn very often but have a 50% chance to drop Butterfly Dust 2A1512665A. 20 Souls in Flight
 
A (dropped by) Wyverns in sky) to make the Butterfly Wings
 
 
Finally, you'll want to get the Golden Shower 2. This weapon is incredible because it inflicts the Ichor buff, which lowers the defense of the enemies by 15.
 
Here is how to get this weapon.
 
1 – Creating a Graveyard biome next to the Dryad NPC. Putting a lot tombstones so she can sell you Crimson Seeds.
 
2 – Using Crimson, find an underground spot you're willing to alter with Crimson. Then, put dirt on the walls and plant the seeds.
 
3 – Wait until the Crimson corrupts your area before you kill Ichor Stickers. They will drop Ichor farm 20.
 
4 -? Farm 20 Souls of Night Underground Corruption or Crison.
 
5 – FINALLY BUY A Spell Tome 2 Wizard NPC. Craft the Golden Shower at the Bookcase.

This should be easy with the Harp. Keep your head down and you'll be fine. You shouldn't have much trouble using your wings, and your dash. Be careful, he might catch you during the head spin. You will surely die.

The Avenger Emblem will be made by combining the Emblem you received from the Wall of Felsh, and 5 of each Soul from the Mechs.
 
We will be relying on this item after Golem.
 
 
Okay, now let's get to the important stuff. To face Plantera, we need to upgrade the weapon.
 
We need 14 Chlorophyte Bars Each bar contains 5 Clorophyte Ores. This means that you will need 70 ores. If you find more, that would be awesome! We'll use it later!
 
Clorophyte can be found in the underground jungle. If you're there, make sure to also check out Life Fruits 23A15124912A for maximum health up to 500HP.
 
 
With the 14 Clorophyte Bars craft A21A15123810A A
 
This powerful weapon can likely carry you for the rest the game!
 
 

Plantera

This one should not be difficult. Make your underground arena in a jungle and circle around it. The second phase is slightly more difficult, but you should be fine.

You can make the Spectre Armor 2A151293A with 66 Spectre Bars
 
 
This Armor has 2 options for Headpieces:
 
 
The Hood: Reduces Magic Damage by 40% and transforms it into healing force
 
Magic damage done to enemies heals players with the lowest health
 
 
The Mask: Magic damage will cause additional injuries to nearby enemies
 
I recommend crafting both. If you are in danger or near death, swap the Hood for the Mask.
 
 
Upgrade your Shield of Cthulhu if you want to increase your dash speed and be able to dodge attacks.
 
While you are in Dungeon, Kill Bone Lee until your get a Black Belt and Tabi.
 
Combine Shoe Spikes and withClimbing Claws to create the Tiger Climbing Gear. 23A15129301A. This item can be combined with the Black Belt or the Tabi to create the Master Ninja Gear.
 
Some people prefer to stick to the Shield Of Cthulhu. But I like the MNG.
 
 
Now you can farm the Frost Moon Event (. Here's the way to activate the event

) and attempt to obtain the Razorpine– Everscream boss. This weapon has an average drop chance of 5.18%.

Simply build a simple arena using a row platform, campfires, heart lanterns, and potions. Kill the Cultist. Your new gear shouldn't cause any problems.

The Cultist is going to drop the Ancient Manipulator crafting station we need to make our final weapon!
 
 
This weapon can only be made if we first defeat the Nebula Pilar.
 
 

Lunar Events

 
 

 
 
Take down the Nebula Pilar first and then the Nebula Fragments. These will be your weapons to kill the Moon Lord.
 
 
Now, kill 2 more Pilars.
 
First, make sure you are in the Arena to meet the Final Boss.
 
Purchase a Blend O Matic– Steampunker NPC. Use the machine to craft Asphalt combining Stone with Gel
 
 
In the air, make a long platform with Asphalt. The longer the better… at least 75 blocks (. I typically go for 1500-2000 blocks). Prepare your Potions. I recommend the following:
 
Regeneration, Swiftness, Ironskin, Lifeforce, Mana regeneration, Mana Power, Rage / Wrath.
 
 
When you're ready, take down the last Pilar! Then get ready for battle!
 
 
 

Final Boss

Moonlord

After you kill the last Pilar you will have 1 minute before your MoonLord spawns. You can combine this time 1 of each Lunar Frangments
