Greetings soldier, this guide is intended to help new recruits become better “builders” in the Foxhole war.

What a builder is.

A “Builder” is a soldier who works on constructing logistical infrastructure and defensive structures. These buildings and structures come in a large variety, and each plays a crucial role in the war.

Builders operate in a wide range of locations as well. From the far back lines where they upkeep logistical infrastructure, or they can be seen directly on the front lines building fortifications to hold back the enemy and discourage their attacks.

Although it is possible for a builder to do their work “solo” it is better to work with multiple builders and work as a team. Teams of builders can perform their job much more quickly and efficiently than what an individual builder can accomplish on their own.

The two basic tools each builder will use are “the hammer” and “the shovel”.

Every soldier who spawns in will automatically have a hammer in the “Primary Equipment Slot” in their inventory.

Pressing the [ 1 ] key on your keyboard will put the hammer in your soldier’s hand.

Once equipped with the hammer in hand, you should see the hammer icon on the upper left-hand side of your screen.

When first equipped, the hammer will be in “build/gather” mode.

With the hammer equipped, press the [ B ] key on your keyboard to open up the “Build” menu.

Clicking on one of the icons in the build menu will put a “blueprint” on your cursor.

You can move your cursor around on the screen, and you can walk around with the blueprint over your cursor.

You can rotate blueprints by holding down the right mouse button and moving your mouse around. This allows you to give your structure a desired orientation.

Once you reach the place where you want to place the blueprint, move your cursor to that location and click the left mouse button. This will place the blueprint down, and you will be able to start construction.

To start construction, walk up to the placed blueprint and click and hold your left mouse button while your cursor is over the blueprint.

You will notice that near the bottom of your screen, the message “Out of Basic Materials” appears.

In order to fully construct your blueprint, you need “Basic Materials – [fandom.com] ” or more commonly known as “Bmats” (bi-mæts) for short.

You will need to have Bmats in your inventory in order to construct your blueprint.

Now with the Bmats in your inventory, click and hold your left mouse button while your cursor is over the blueprint, and you will start to build your blueprint.

As you build, the blueprint will count down the amount of Bmats left that are needed to finish the structure.

As long as you have enough Bmats in your inventory, eventually, the number will reach zero, and the structure will be complete. If you run out of Bmats halfway through construction, your blueprint will remain in its location for an extended amount of time, giving you the chance to run back to base and refill your inventory with Bmats.

The Advanced Hammer.

Now we will discuss the more advanced controls of the hammer.

With the hammer in hand, press the [ F ] Key on your keyboard to change the mode of the hammer from “Build/Gather Mode” to “Upgrade Mode”.

As the name implies, upgrade mode allows you to upgrade and/or modify completed structures.

Use your movement controls to face the structure you wish to upgrade/modify.

The hammer icon will appear over the structure you are facing.

The structure you are facing will also display which faction owns that structure, how much health that structure has, and who built that structure.

Press the [ E ] key to upgrade the structure, or to open up the upgrades/modifications menu for that structure.

Barbed Wire

Barbed Wire is a structure used to obstruct the movement of enemy troops. However, this structure also obstructs the movement of friendly troops as well. When a soldier touches the Barbed Wire, it attaches to their clothing, dramatically slowing them down. Since this structure is an obstacle to both friend and foe alike, you will need to think strategically about its placement. You don’t want to place Barbed Wire in a position that compromises the movement of your comrades.

Barbed Wire should mainly be built as a means of controlling troop movement, not stopping it.

A good way of using Barbed Wire is using it to deny the enemy positions of cover. Since you can shoot straight through Barbed Wire, you can place it in front of obstacles like Sandbags and Stone Walls. On your side, you can get up right next to the wall, and use it as cover. Unlike the enemy side, the Barbed Wire will block them from getting up close to the wall, thus preventing them from using it as effective cover.

Something important you should keep in mind; Barbed Wire can’t obstruct the movement of friendly or enemy vehicles. If you have a row of Sandbags with Barbed Wire in front, you and your comrades are still vulnerable to enemy vehicle attacks.

Sandbags

Sandbags are a cheap but weak type of fortification that provides cover for troops crouched behind them. Although they are immune to small arms and heavy machine-gun fire, they are vulnerable to explosive weapons such as High Explosive Grenades, Cannons, and Artillery. Sandbags can also be destroyed by land vehicles ramming into them (except for Motorcycles, Ambulances, and Bicycles). So, make sure to place your Sandbags in a position where vehicles can’t reach them or construct Tank Traps in front of your Sandbags to protect them from enemy ramming attacks.

Sandbags can be used as cover from either side. So, you should keep in mind that Sandbags are just as much of a position of cover for you as they are for the enemy. This means that any sandbag positions you construct could be used against you by enemy troops. Think strategically about the placement of Sandbags, and only construct them when needed.

To help ensure that the Sandbags you build won’t be used against your comrades, try placing some barbed wire in front of the Sandbags. Since you can shoot straight through barbed wire, it won’t obstruct the aim of your comrade’s guns, and it will prevent enemy troops from getting close enough to use the Sandbags as effective cover.

Something important you should keep in mind; barbed wire can’t obstruct the movement of friendly or enemy vehicles. If you have a row of Sandbags with barbed wire in front, you and your comrades are still vulnerable to enemy vehicle attacks.

Manned Foxhole

The Manned Foxhole is a cheap, early-stage defensive structure used to defend against enemy infantry. Foxholes are the backbone of controlling captured territory and the main tool in ensuring the security of logistic routes, material sources, and urban areas. Their primary role is aggressive area-denial against individual and small groups of enemy troops. Low cost and quick deployment also make Foxholes an important tool in prolonged engagements on any battlefront.

A garrisoned Foxhole is good at targeting enemy troops that are either running straight at the Foxhole, or are standing still, but they have trouble hitting enemy troops that are moving perpendicular to the Foxhole’s line of fire.

If enemy troops get close enough to your Foxhole, they could throw High Explosive Grenades at it and potentially destroy your Foxhole.

To prevent this from happening, there are a couple of placement methods you should keep in mind while constructing Foxholes.

1. Build multiple Foxholes to defend a specific position.

It’s relatively easy for the enemy to destroy a single Foxhole. Having multiple Foxholes near one another helps them defend each other. However, don’t build Foxholes right next to one another, otherwise, the splash damage from enemy explosive weapons could damage and destroy multiple Foxholes in a single blast.

2. Place the Barbed Wire in front of, or around, Foxholes.

Keep the Barbed Wire far enough away from a Foxhole so that enemy troops won’t be close enough to reach the Foxhole with High Explosive Grenades. However, you don’t want the Barbed Wire to be too far away from the Foxhole, otherwise, the garrisoned rifleman in the Foxhole won’t have the range to protect the Barbed Wire from being destroyed by enemy troops. About 20 meters away from the foxhole is where you want to place the Barbed Wire. You can measure this distance using binoculars.

3. Place the Foxhole at the end of a narrow passageway.

The enemy can’t dodge the fire from your Foxhole if they can only run in a straight line towards or away from your Foxhole.

Gun Turret

The Gun Turret (also known as “anti-armor turret” or “AT Gun”) is an anti-vehicle defensive structure used to defend against all kinds of enemy vehicles.

A garrisoned Gun Turret will target enemy vehicles, but they won’t target enemy troops, and they cannot be manned by you or your comrades. Gun Turrets are also immune to small arms and heavy machine-gun fire but are vulnerable to high explosives. All of these qualities make Gun Turrets especially vulnerable to enemy troop attacks.

Make sure there are friendly Foxholes and Rifle Bunkers near by to keep your Gun Turret protected from enemy troop attacks.

Wall

Walls are a versatile type of fortification that can serve a wide range of purposes. Walls come in three tiers (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3), and the different tiers can serve different roles.

The first tier of Wall (also known as a “fence”) functions similarly to Barbed Wire. Neither friendly nor enemy troops can pass through a Tier 1 Wall, but they can both shoot through a Tier 1 Wall, much like with Barbed Wire. However, unlike Barbed Wire, it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to throw grenades over a Tier 1 Wall. This makes Tier 1 Walls excellent for protecting Foxholes from High Explosive Grenades. Just make sure that the Tier 1 Walls don’t get upgraded to Tier 2, otherwise, the Foxholes line of fire will be blocked.

Gate

Gates function in a similar capacity to Walls in that they help block the movement of enemy troops and vehicles. However, unlike Walls, Gates can be opened by your comrades to allow friendly troops and vehicles to pass through.

Watch Tower

The Watch Tower is a reconnaissance structure that constantly searches the surrounding landscape for any entities, hostile or friendly, and reports their location to Map Intelligence.

Watchtowers are a crucial element of logistics infrastructure as they provide Intel coverage over expanses of land too large for effective fortification. They function as an early warning system to let your comrades know that the enemy is moving within your territory.

Watchtowers have a spotting range radius of 80 meters. This range will be reduced during rainstorms down to 60 meters, then to 40 meters, depending on the intensity of the rainstorms in the area.

Watchtowers are relatively flimsy and can be easily destroyed by heavy machine-gun fire or High explosives. So they will need to be rebuilt and maintained as often as possible.

Encampment

An Encampment is the first tier of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) that you can construct. Encampments are a type of FOB that can be built by players wherever they want with a Construction Vehicle. They can be upgraded to Field Bases and Outposts. Stockpiling and Respawning is available at these FOBs just like every other base.

Field Hospital

The Field Hospital (FH) is a world structure that functions in the same way a normal Hospital does, just on a smaller scale. It provides 6 beds for Critically Wounded Soldiers. Soldiers can be delivered to Field Hospitals by ambulance or carried by players on foot. It is unlocked from the start of a new war.

Sign Post

Sign Posts are structures that allow you to leave messages around the world for your fellow troops to read. These Sign Posts can convey important information and advice to troops in the local area, or they can be used to create inspiring words to boost morale.

Sign Posts can’t be destroyed by gunfire. They can be “upvoted” or “downvoted”, which will increase/decrease their lifespans. This helps remove unhelpful and/or annoying Sign Posts from the area.

Fire Pit

Fire Pits are a useful structure for countering the effects of severe cold weather. The heat they produce helps prevent troops and vehicles from freezing during a snowstorm.

A fire pit will not burn on its own. The fire pit needs diesel fuel in order to stay lit. You add diesel fuel to a fire pit in the same way you refuel vehicles. A full tank of diesel fuel will keep a fire lit for 20 minutes.

The shovel (sometimes called spade) is used to dig under the landscape to make Trenches and Bunkers.

If you wish to obtain a shovel, will either need to find one in a spawn base stockpile or make shovels at a factory.

Once you have found a shovel, place it in your “Primary Equipment Slot” in your inventory.

Trench

Trenches are an oblong hole in the ground that provides cover for troops to fire from.

If you are a new recruit who doesn’t have much experience as a builder, there are some rules you should follow before you start digging trenches.

Rule 1. Don’t dig Trenches.

Rule 2. Don’t dig Trenches.

Rule 3. No, seriously, don’t dig Trenches.

Rule 4. No not dig Trenches!

Rule 5. FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR COMRADES, DO NOT DIG TRENCHES!

Now…

As to WHY you shouldn’t dig Trenches, the reasons are as follows:

1. Trenches are just as much of a position of cover for you as they are for the enemy.

If your squad doesn’t have enough manpower to keep the enemy heald back, the enemy could push in and take over your Trench. Should that happen, then you have inadvertently given the enemy a position of cover from which they will attack you from.

Therefore, Trenches shouldn’t be constructed if you don’t have enough troops to keep the Trenches guarded.

2. Trenches are death traps.

When you dig a new Trench, that Trench is a “tier 1” Trench. Tier 1 Trenches can easily be destroyed by vehicles ramming into them (except Bicycle and Motorcycle). When a Trench is destroyed, it collapses in and kills all of the troops occupying it. A single tier 1 Trench can contain dozens of troops, so a Trench getting destroyed could kill dozens of your comrades. If you dig a Trench, and your comrades start using it while enemy vehicles are nearby, you have effectively put them in a potential death trap.

Therefore, don’t construct Trenches in areas that can be accessed by vehicles.

There are exceptions where the construction of a Trench is needed, but the general rule is that Trenches should only ever be constructed when they are absolutely needed.

Should you need to build Trenches, you should take every precaution you can to ensure that enemy forces can’t effectively use those Trenches against you.

} – – – Precautions – – – {

1. Don’t dig Trenches anywhere near a friendly base.

The closer a Trench is to a friendly base, the more enticing that Trench is to the enemy. If the Trench is within firing range of a friendly base, the enemy will push hard to occupy that Trench so they have a point of cover to fire directly at a friendly base, killing off arriving soldiers and blocking the resupply of that base.

2. Always have a Foxhole, a Rifle Garrison Bunker, or a Garrisoned House close to your Trench.

Foxholes, Rifle Garrison Bunkers, and Garrisoned Houses have “Garrisoned Soldiers” that stand guard over friendly-occupied areas at all times. They will fire at any enemy troops that get in your Trench or try to occupy your Trench. Try to place your Trench in a position where Garrisoned Soldiers can fire down the length of the Trench so that the enemy has less cover and are more likely to get hit. You also don’t want to place any Sandbags between the Trench and Garrisoned Soldiers because those Sandbags could obstruct the Garrisoned Soldier’s line of fire into the Trench.

3. Set up Barbed Wire around all non-friendly access points.

Place the Barbed Wire on the sides of the Trench that are facing the enemy. This will make it much more difficult for enemy troops to occupy your Trench since they will have to go around the Barbed Wire before they can get in the Trench.

Trench Connector

The Trench connector is similar to the trench in function, but has an irregular shape. They can be used to connect two trenches, two bunkers or a trench, and a bunker to each other where a normal trench cannot fit.

Trench Emplacement

A trench emplacement is a variant trench that has an octagonal shape that can serve as an emplacement for manual defenses such as 68mm Anti-Tank Cannon, 14.5 Anti Infantry Flak Gun, or an emplaced artillery piece.
