Introduction: Feral Dog vs. Named Feral Dog
Along with the new DLC “the Isle of Siptah” some new pet companions and mounts have been introduced into the game. Among those who caught my attention were Feral Dogs, Greater Feral dogs and .. the Named Feral Dogs.
Just like Named T4 thralls, these named doggies are MUCHmore powerful, – each in their unique way, – than their Feral Dog and Greater Feral Dog fellows.
At first, they might seem as strong as Greater Feral Dog but they have hidden unique static Perk gain upon lvl 10, 15 and 20lvl’ reach. This guide is about the named Feral Dogs and contains full info on those perks + some additional info about finding the puppies and growing them.
There are 7 named dogs in the game: Apollo, Aries, Brutus, Koji, Sigrid, Oskar and Thor. As you can see from the picture, they look exactly like Greater Feral Dogs + they will have similar start attributes. Each Named dog has hidden static perks which will pop up once they reach a corresponding level. There is no tip or any kind of indication so far in the game which would hint on potential outcomes of leveling a Named dog.
For example,
+25% to Survival or
+15% to Strengh together with
+5% to Vitality at lvl 10 / 15 / 20. Afaik, there are no other pets in the game so far who would get such powerful buffs.
Where to find & How to grow a pup
CATCHING A RIGHT PUPPY
If you want to try out a named doggy, make sure you will catch the right variant of puppy. Visually the puppies look just as the ones of Feral dog, the difference is in their names: a normal feral dog’s puppy is called “Feral Dog Pup” whereas a named dog’s one will always be “Playful Pup”. The latter is the one we will be looking for.
You can also see the difference in description, the pup we are looking for has a tip in its’ description on their diet.
LOCATION
I was always able to see 2 playful puppies next to a little stygian camp, which is located in the top left corner of M12 tile. As long as you have enough encumbrance points invested, you can just rush into a camp, grab puppies and run away without engaging into a fight. I will update the guide once I see playful pups somewhere else in the game but as for now, I was able to find them only on Isle of Siptah. Neither can I speak of the community-created maps, as I’ve never tried them out.
NORMAL PUP vs. PLAYFUL PUP:
To make it easier for you to understand and to avoid writing the wall of text, I made a simple image showing the difference b/w growing a Feral Dog Pup and growing a Playful Pup:
As you can see, the outcome is pretty random, the colour of the dog will depend on the Variant (A, B, C or D) – you can see the Variant of a Puppy only through Admin console. Whether you get a normal Feral dog or a Greater one is also random, but just like with any other pets, you can buy yourself an increased growth chance (up to +25%) of getting a greater one by giving them special food.
YOU CANNOT GET A NAMED DOG FROM A FERAL DOG PUP.
Just like in a previous image, you can see that the results are pretty random, except for 2 important things: Playful Pups will eat only
Exquisite meat and will result in one of the Named dogs. Once they grow up, they will have the same diet as normal Feral dogs but while in an animal pen, make sure you have 1 Exquisite meat for each playful puppy you want to grow.
Again, you can see which variant of the dog you have only as admin, if you can’t get yourself admin rights, the crafting result will look random to you. Each Named dog is a*signed its’ own color, so Brutus will always have black fur, Apollo – light brown one etc.
– Apollo ( Variant A | Light brown fur )

Apollo will always get the following perks:

General Info on Diet
As said above, unlike a (greater-) feral dog, the named one will always have the same static Perks once levels 10, 15 and 20 are reached. However, just like by any other pet, you can influence the way it levels up by following a special diet and giving an extra chance (not a guarantee!) to get a specific attribute on a level up. This table below will give you an idea which foods affect getting ceratin attribute chance. The table is valid for all named dogs.
Preferred Food | +% Strength | +% Agility | +% Vitality | +% Accuracy | +% Survival |
Abysmal Flesh | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+14%
Raw Pork | ⠀⠀⠀+14% | ||||
Human Flesh | ⠀⠀⠀+14% | ||||
Exotic Flesh | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+14% | ||||
Exquisite meat | |||||
Savoury Flesh | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+ 7% | ⠀⠀⠀+ 7%
Shadesp. Stringy Meat | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+ 7% | ⠀⠀⠀+ 7%
Savory Jerky | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+ 7% | ||||
Meat Strips | ⠀⠀⠀+ 7% | ||||
Spiced Slivers | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+ 7% | ⠀⠀⠀⠀+ 7% |
!!! – Note – This table was taken from the Conan Wiki as it is, all credits for it go to its’ contributors. I’m still testing which food would boost Survival attribute chance and will put it into the table once I get it.
Don’t forget that each dog will develop in its’ unique way when it comes to attributes’ changes throughout the leveling process, but the Perks will remain static for sure, as described in this guide.
