Tailoring can be used to repair and improve clothing's resistance to bites, scratches and bullets. This Zombie Survivors Guide outlines the most effective clothing to wear in fighting against the undead and the best way to level up as of 41.73.
Introduction
Tailoring in Zomboid is a very useful skill that can increase your chances of survival in case you are ambushed by a Zombie horde. It reduces the likelihood of getting bitten, scratched or even killed in multiplayer. You can also use it to repair your clothes and accessories so you can still display your favorite style from your loot.
These are the three most important tools to help you get started.
A Needle – Can be found in medicine cabinets and sewing kit boxes.
Scissors – Found in desks, drawers, shelves, offices and school buildings.
Thread – Found in sheds, garages, shops, vehicles, and sewing kit boxes, but the easiest way is tearing rags. More information on this will follow.
Levelling
While tailoring is easier in this patch, it's still quite difficult. To maximize XP gain, it is a good idea to first read the tailoring book.
Tailoring Vol. 1-5 – These can be found at book stores, houses, schools, and warehouses
Lucky survivors may stumble upon a VHS that can easily be played on a TV to give you flatXP. However, these rare items are not common. These are Home VHS recordings. They are a rare loot that can be found in normal houses.

Tailoring 101
Once you have your boosts, XP becomes easy.
- Make s*rips and sheets from scrap clothes by ripping them.
- Add padding to clothes. Ripped Sheets can be used to protect your stronger fabrics.
- You can remove the padding to gain a little more XP.
You can speed up the process by finding clothes that cover many body parts. All types of clothing are good: Long Johns and Coveralls, Coats, Coats, Aprons, Coats, Coats, and Leather Jackets.
Fabrics
There are three types to choose from. All start at a low +1 or 2.2% scratch/bite resistance. This will increase as you get better at Tailoring.
Ripped Sheets – Up to 5% Scratch resistance.
Denim Strips – Up to 5% Bite, 10% Scratch and 5% Bullet resistance.
Leather Strips – Up to 10% Bite, 20% scratch and 10% Bullet resistance.
Repairing
Tailoring Level 8 will give you the ability to repair and patch holes. If you're using the right material, you can restore it fully.
T-shirts and sweaters can be repaired using ripped sheets. Denim s*rips fix jeans, denim jackets, and leather s*ripes are for certain leather items.
Best Clothes
Tailoring's effectiveness is due to the ability to stack your patched clothing. Layers can be worn over each others to increase resistance to armour or heavy clothes like the Fireman’s outfit. It not only makes you look great but also makes you extremely hot!
If you are just starting:
- Summer is best when you have lots of body part slots to patch.
- High Insulation can be helpful in winter, but you should be careful not to sweat as it can lead to illness.
Below is an example of the best tailor's construction to provide maximum protection.
You can take off the extra insulated clothing if you are concerned about overheating. Summer heat is not something to be concerned about. You just need to drink more water.
The Army Coat can be replaced with a Leather Jacket, however it comes with -3% attack speed and is -2% run speed worse off. There are two types, so make sure to get the long leather jacket!
As Leather Trousers are quite rare, Overalls may prove to be an easier choice and also come with the bonus chest protection at the cost of some leg protection which allows you to remove the Tank Top.
The Short Sleeve Shirt or Baseball Shirt are a little hotter but can replace the Hawaiian shirt.
Not all scarves are made the same! For different insulation levels, check different colors. Blue s*ripes are the coolest while solid colours are warmest.
No helmet provides neck protection any more, so pick your favourite 100% Bite/Scratch helmet!
