This guide will tell you how to counter greatshields in Elden Ring PvP.
For STR builds
Normal great-shields can be absolutely demolished by STR builds, a good old jumping attack with any ultra-great-sword or colossal weapon should immediately guard break any ordinary great-shield users (provided that you are using the Claw talisman which boosts jumping attacks).
An alternative to jump attacks involves utilising Vyke’s war spear in order to build up madness, this is a very effective strategy.
Claw talisman:
Vyke’s war spear:
The ash of war is great but normal hits work just as well, also be careful not to afflict yourself with madness.
For DEX/ARC builds
For DEX you really just want to slap bleed or frostbite onto your weapons and go to town on their shield.
The best weapon to use for DEX builds for countering great-shields is by far Rivers of blood as it has range, damage and good status buildup. You can easily eviscerate any great-shield user with this weapon.
Rivers of blood:
Spam the ash of war.
For INT/Faith builds
Magic/holy/lightning/fire can flat out deal damage through great-shields, however it is significantly reduced.
This means that you can opt to bombard the enemy with spells until they die but there is a very good chance that you simply won’t have the FP to do that.
Adulla’s moonblade is my best choice for sorceries that counter great-shield users as it still does some damage through the shield and builds up frostbite extremely quickly.
For incantations I would recommend using Ekzyke’s decay, Scarlet Aeonia or any madness incantations.
If you choose to run madness incantations you should also run the Frenzied seal as it provides a significant buff to madness buildup.

The Fingerprint greatshield
The Fingerprint great-shield is by far the best great-shield in the game as with the right set up it takes zero stamina damage (which means that jumping attacks with STR builds won’t work) and makes lighter weapon cla*ses such as rapiers bounce (which means that they can’t build up status effects) upon hits which makes it much harder to counter than the others.
The good news is that it is still susceptible to status effect build up from magics and heavier weapons.
The main weapons that I use to counter this are as follows: Vyke’s war spear, Rivers of blood, Adulla’s moonblade and any frenzy incantations.
The funny method (only for invasions)
Bait the enemy to an elevator/ledge and pull them down (this will instantly kill them) by using any of the following weapons and their respective ashes of war:
Starscourge great-sword:
Meteoric ore blade:
Onyx lord’s great-sword:
If you simply can’t be bothered
