These settings are recommended for two types of PCs, if you have problems with frame rates in Horizons 4.0/ Odyssey
Before you begin.
If you are experiencing frame rate issues, the first thing you should do is to clear the game's graphics configuration file. I do this after each major update.
You can't uninstall the game and reinstall it again. This will not remove these files. It is best to do it manually.
First, make sure Elite Dangerous has stopped running. Then, open Explorer to find this folder.
%LocalAppData%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\
There should be four to five XML files and a StartPreset.
You can then delete them all and start the game. Your shaders are rebuilt, and you will be able to enter the Graphics settings menu for the modifications below.
Suggested Settings
I have an Intel i7-6700k, 32GB of RAM, and a GTX 1660Ti. Here are the settings I use.
If you have a GTX970 (or an equivalent), all settings in BOLD need to be lowered by one- or two values. (E.g. (E.g.
1. Expand the Display subsection and ensure that you have selected your native resolution. Also, set the frame limit to 60. Vertical Sync is also an option, as well as Fullscreen Borderless.
If you're interested in higher frame rates, great! But for now, try 60.
2. Next, expand the Quality Section.
Model Draw Distance: approximately 50%
High Texture Quality
Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x8
Directional shadows: Medium
Spot Shadows: Medium
Bloom at its best
Blur on (option)
Anti-Aliasing: SMAA
Supersampling – x 1.0 (Unless you have an extremely powerful system)
Upscaling is possible if you are on 4k and have poor frame rates)
Ambient Occlusion: Medium
Environment: Medium
FX Quality Medium (these used to give LOWER frame rates for Low than Medium!)
Particle Effects Medium
High field depth
Material Quality: High
Galaxy Map Quality High
Terrain Quality: High
Terrain LOD blending: High
Terrain Work: From the left
Terrain Material: High
Terrain Sampler: High
Terrain checkerboard: Off

Volumetric effects are high
You can adjust the field of view to your liking, but the frame rate will be lower the larger it is.
A note about memory speed
This game is dependent on your memory speed. Check that your BIOS is set correctly for memory speed.
E.g. A RTX3070 with 3600mhz system RAM set to 2200mhz can run the game at 1/4-1/2 the frame rates that it is capable of. This has been verified and tested.
Here we come to an end for Elite Dangerous Odyssey/Horizons 4.0 Settings hope you enjoy it. If you think we forget something to include or we should make an update to the post let us know via comment, and we will fix it asap! Thanks and have a great day!
