This guide is meant to provide data and analysis of the many production chains that are present in Farming Simulator. This data is also available as a spreadsheet.
Guide introduction
Welcome to what is now my second guide in the Farming Simulator franchise. Yay.
This will be going in-depth into the newest mechanic of FS: production chains.
All of the data for the production chains is organized in a spreadsheet, and color coded for your convenience. You can access the spreadsheet here. – [google.com]
Not everything in this guide will be accurate, as there are some aspects of production chains that I do not know how they work. These are pointed out wherever my knowledge lacks.
All comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome, as this is the best way that this guide will improve.
So, what is a production chain?
If you ever played Farming Simulator 19 and got into the mods, there were many factory-like mods that you could use, such as seed production, automatic TMR station, and so on, all using the base mod Global Company.
This is basically that, but made more user-friendly and properly incorporated into the game.
Production chains allow you to process your simple grains, wool, milk, etc. into more profitable goods that you can sell at any point in the chain.

Production chains exist as factories, which are either placed in by the map author or placed by the player themselves through the construction menu, though not all factories can be placed by the player.
Additionally, all production chains use “recipes,” which are what the production chain will make with the specified inputs. These will be discussed in length in the next sections.
The “chain” part of production chains refers to how the output of one factory can be used in the output of another, like how flower from the grain mill can be used to make bread in the bakery.
How do I use the production chains?
First, you need to own the factory you want to use. To do so, either purchase it yourself through the build menu (Tip: use Left Shift + P to get to the build menu), or through purchasing the existing factory on the map.
To purchase a map-placed one, simply walk up to the wrench icon an interact with it (Default: R). You will be prompted on whether or not you want to buy it.
Once bought, your factory can be used. First, go to the factory’s menu by interacting with the wrench icon, or through the game menu. From there, you will need to activate a recipe.
Below is an example of a factory menu for the dairy:
From here, we can see:
- Its status
- Cycles per hour
- Cost per hour
- Current Recipe
- Input (incoming) materials
- Output (outgoing) products
Now, let’s break down what this all means.
- Storing: this will store the goods until a set amount is reached, then it will spawn a pallet containing the outgoing products. The area the pallets spawn are usually marked with zone markers.
- Distributing: this one is unknown to me, but from what I can infer, this will send your products to other production chains.
- Selling: pretty self explanatory, the product is sold directly from the factory.
The profit you get from this is less than if you were to let the pallet get created and transport it to a sell point. The price is also affected by the seasonal fluctuation of that item. Thanks to Grimloc – [steamcommunity.com] for this information!
What information is available in this guide?
Most of this information was obtained straight from the game code (via reading the XML files used by the placeables system). Otherwise, it can be found by playing the game as well. This data was stored into a spreadsheet for easy reading, the link for which is found above. Each factory will have its own section, and will show:
- Input amount and type
- Output amount and type
- Input-output ratio (Total of inputs to total of outputs, exceptions where noted)
- Input ratio (same as above, but expressed as a decimal, and output equals 1. Useful if above ratio doesn’t simplify.)
- Cost per active hour
- Cycles per hour

Dairy, Cheese Dairy, Chocolate Factory
The Recipes for the Dairy, Cheese Dairy, and Chocolate Factory are the same across all building types. The main difference between these building is what recipes they are restricted to.

Greenhouses
Greenhouses recipes are (mostly) the same. Greenhouses are also the cheapest production chain building, as well as the easiest to add inputs to (considering all you need is a source of water and a mobile water tank), so I recommend this if you want to gain some experience with production chains.

Conclusion
Production Chains allow you multiple avenues of increasing the value of your yield. Productions Chains work via inputs and outputs, and selecting what building you use depends on what you produce.
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!
