In the first Dragon’s Dogma, all items were accessible via the menu for items. Later, shortcuts were added. On PC keyboard shortcuts are available, but you can’t use controller shortcuts. It’s not convenient to reach for the keyboard while using the controller. This is especially true if you’re sitting on the couch. Here’s a way you can create an Steam controller layout to access the shortcuts for items using only your controller.

What’s the problem?

In the game in the game, pressing L1 or Dpad will register as a keystroke that is 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. This lets you use shortcuts for items.

How do I shortcut items?

Open the item menu, choose item, and then press keystroke (in this case, L1 + Dpad). You’ll know it worked when a number shows up beside the item, which corresponds to 1, 2, 3, or 4 2, 3, or 4.

Extraordinary Payments

Some items, such as throwables and special arrows cannot be shortened. It’s unfortunate but it’s a shame. It is possible to shortcut the lighting and consumables. Being able to turn off or on the lantern without entering the menu is a massive improvement in the user experience already.

L1 will release the shield or bow, in the event that you have one. in case it is bothering you then use R1 (Right Bumper) as the switch button for mode in step 8 instead.

You can actually shorten 5 items. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. You can follow a similar method to map R3 (right stick click) to 5. I suggest using it for lanterns and saving the Dpad and L1 for consumables.

Advanced tips.

You can set up additional mappings too. Have you ever felt annoyed that you could not move the camera while charging a focused bolt? Some users find the claw grip uncomfortable. You can still control the camera using claw grip. Just create a mapping for R3. By default R3 (right-stick click) puts your camera in the direction you are facing. You can create a mode-shift map R1 + R2 to register an R3 keypress. So when you are charging the bolt that is focused, simply press R1 + R2 and the camera will change to where your character is facing.
