This is a workaround for anyone with the black screen bug. The black screen prevents you from playing.
 

Intro

I'm seeing many people still posting about the blackscreen bug, which prevents players from playing after they have started the game or after they have received the crown from the One who Waits.
 
 
These two events trigger a video to play when they occur. One of these is the Devolver Digital Logo. The other is Intro cinematic where a lamb gets the Red Crown.
 
The problem is that the video won't play because video playback is broken at the moment.
 
However, the game will not progress until it registers that video is finished.
 
 
The video won't start, but the game is still waiting for it to finish. So you get a blackscreen and a softlock.
 
 
I had to suffer this problem and, with the help of others, reverse engineered one of the.dlls files. This allowed me to make a simple fix so you can avoid these issues until an official fix is available.
 
 
 

How to apply workarounds

It really isn't difficult. I didn’t do much, it’s just a quick file substitution.
 
 
Simple run through:
 
 

1. Make sure you know which fix is needed
2. The link allows you to download the.dll file.
3. Replace the matching.dll in the Cult of the Lamb file files under the "Managed" folder
4. Start the game

Okay, this might seem like a simplified explanation for those not technically inclined. But you can still follow the link to get more information.
 
 
1. Identify the correct fix
 
 
First, you must determine what fix you need.
 
The first fix skips Devolver Digital splash logo. and is the Intro cinematic that follows the Red Crown.
 
After receiving the Red Crown, the second Fix skips only and the Intro cinematic.
 
 
In a nutshell: If you are seeing a black screen following the Massive Monster logo, go for the first fix.
 
If you get a blackscreen after receiving the Red Crown form the One Who Waits then you should seek the second fix.
 
If you don’t know what to do, ask for help.
 
 
2. Download the.dll File
 
 
Below you will find links to the file that you require. These files are known as.dll files. However, you don’t need to be concerned about what they actually are.
 
The link will take me to my google drive folder. Just right click and save the one you need.
 
 

 
 
3. Navigate to correct folder
 
 
The 'Managed' folder is the folder you will need to access. There are two routes to it.
 
 
It can be accessed via Steam.
 
 

1. Right click the Steam game
2. Go on "Properties"
3. Go to 'Local Files.
4. Go to 'Browse …'
5. Open "Cult Of The Lamb_Data".
6. Open "Managed".

 
Or, you can use File Explorer to navigate to it.
 
Simply go to
 
 
"C:\Program Files (x86 – \Steam\steamapps\common\Cult of the Lamb\Cult Of The Lamb_Data\Managed"
 
 
(Providing that the game is installed on your C drive, you can simply replace the drive letters.
 
 

 
 
3. Replace the file
 
 
Simply copy the file you downloaded to this folder after you reach it.
 
It will prompt to ask if you would like to replace or skip files.
 
Click 'Replace the File in the Destination'.
 
 
4. Start the game
 
 
That's it! You're now ready to start the game
 
Assuming you did this while it was still open, if not, just start it again.

Notes

These fixes are temporary until an official patch fixes the problem.
 
When the patch is released, it will automatically replace any file that was modified. You don't have to reverse it.
 
 
This means that any patch that is released will be reverted.
 
 
You will need to replace the file if a patch is released that does not resolve the black screen issue.
 
 
You might also want to back up your save files. However, given the number of bugs at the time this article was written, it is possible that a patch will be released that fixes an issue. It would be silly if it did. But, just incase.
 
 
This is a good practice in case of an other bug that could permanently corrupt your save.
 
 
To go to:
 
 
'C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\LocalLow\Massive Monster\Cult Of The Lamb'
 
 
Be sure to replace the %USERNAME% field with your username
 
 
Once you are done, copy the entire "saves" folder to another folder as a backup.
 
Do this regularly, of course.
 
 
Be careful. You can lose your save if you accidentally delete this folder.
 
You can also recycle it if you don't have the option of using the Recycle Bin. It's gone. .
