This is a guide for Caves of Lore – Spells and Abilities Information

This guide will show you how to use abilities and spells in Caves of Lore.

Using Abilities to Enhance Spells

Spells are similar to abilities in almost every way, the main difference is how they’re acquired.

Spells, abilities and other magic can be used out of combat or in combat depending on which spell or ability it is. Some spells are only available in combat. Others are only available in combat.

Using Spells, Abilities and Skills outside of Combat

To use a spell outside of combat, select the spells/abilities button by clicking the action icon.

The Spell/Ability list will display all the spells or abilities that you and your party have that can be used out of combat. Clicking on any of them will cast the spell.

Use spells and abilities in combat

You can choose a spell from your Combat slot to use it immediately during combat. Or, you can click on a button that says Spells and Ability (the same icon as outside combat). Hovering on a spell will reveal the description. Clicking will activate a spell or an ability.

Acquiring (Spells)

Spells, such as Spellbooks, can be acquired via items that are equipped to the character. Spells also can be acquired via other items equipped with enchantments.

Some spells cannot be unlocked until you have achieved a sufficient level in another.

Memorizing (Spells)

The spells tab will show either a purple line (the rightmost bar), or a corresponding purple bar. The purple line represents the progress made in memorizing a spell. A purple outline shows that the spell was memorized. The bar for memorization fills up the more spells you use. Once a memory is achieved, the item needed to acquire the spell can no longer be used.

Mind and Spirit restrictions (Spells).

You may remember that on the previous screen, some spells had a red color. Spells require Mind/Spirit, and this requirement depends on their level. This requirement does NOT require a combination between Mind and Spirit. It only requires that atleast one of them meets the requirement. For example if the requirement for a person is 15, a mental score of 15 is sufficient, but a spirit score of 1 is not.

You can view the MIND and SPIRIT of a character in the Inventory tab.

If you are not able to cast certain spells, they will be displayed in red. They will also appear with a red outline both in combat and in the inventory’s spell tab.

Clicking on a red outline spell in a spell tab will reveal the MIND/SPIRIT Requirement

MIND and Spirit can be temporarily enhanced by music bonuses and consumables at camp. Equipped items can also be used to modify them.

Activating an obelisk can also permanently boost stats such MIND and INTELLIGENCE.

Abilities have no MIND or SPIRIT requirements, so this does NOT apply to them.

Acquiring Ability

Ability points are used to buy abilities. Some characters also have abilities they come with. After each 5 levels, you receive an ability point (if your level is divisible up to 5).

The ability button will display all the unlockable abilities, along with a button that allows you to buy additional abilities.

You can tell that you have a certain number of ability points by looking at the orange dot next the character. The ability tab will also be highlighted orange.

Mastering the Abilities

In the ability section, all abilities are either marked with a purple line (the bar on the rightmost side) or a small purple bar. The purple line represents the progress in mastery. The mastery bar will grow as you use this ability. Once an aptitude is mastered, the locked abilities will become accessible.

Mana (MP) Costs

Each spell or ability is associated with a certain amount of mana. The spell or ability will be greyed out when your character does not possess the necessary mana. Consuming consumable items can help you increase your mana while in combat. To increase your mana, you can rest or consume consumables in camp. There is natural mana regrowth. In rare cases, some spells or powers have variable mana.

Assemble monster. You can check your inventory to see how much mana is left.
