Basic information

Icarus is a planet sized Moon orbiting the Gas Giant Minos in the Proxima Centauri star system located 4.2 light years from Earth.

Icarus comes from Greek mythology. You can read more about him in the wiki linked above.
 
You should note that Icarus’ father was Daedalus who build the Labyrinth for the King of Minos.
 
Since both Minos, and Icarus are named in the game it has been guessed that the space station orbiting Icarus is named Daedalus. This hasn’t been revealed as of yet.
 
 
Sometime before 2135 Icarus was selected to be the first planet to be terraformed.
 
During the terraforming they uncovered exotics. The most expensive ore in the Universe.
 
 
The exotics some how interfered with the terraforming, and made the planet uninhabitable.
 
 
With the discovery of exotics a rush of people went to Icarus set to make their fortunes. Similar to the old gold rushes on Earth.
 
 
The planet was opened to prospectors and claims were issued. The first prospectors were called the, “First Cohort”
 
 
The First Cohort’s time period can be seen on Mo’s ID badge in the trailer as between
 
12 March 2135, and 12 March 2140
 
 
The filming of No Rescue can be seen on the clock in K’s room as May 4th 2162 or 27 years after the First Cohort landed on Icarus

1) How did we get to Icarus?
 
 
The journey to Icarus was brutal, it was four light years from Earth.
 
Thirty trillion miles and two years in long sleep.
 
Talk about jet lag.
 
 
2) What happened to Icarus?
 
 
It was the exotics that killed the terraforming.
 
Screwed with the enzymes, then again, they changed everything.
 
 
3) How come we go down on our first drop without tools and have to make primitive tools?
 
3a) How come we didn’t buy tools before we came?
 
 
People always think that we had a bunch of advanced tech up there,
 
but we had nothing.
 
We spent everything just trying to get there.
 
We were like cave people in spacesuits those first few drops.
 
If we needed shelter or tools or something,
 
well, we had to make it ourselves.
 
 
4) How can the animals breathe on Icarus but we can’t breathe there?
 
 

 
It was like going back in time and seeing the Earth a million years ago.
 
The trees, the plants, the animals, they’re from Earth.
 
I mean, the bio team had adapted them after the terraforming went to–
 
 
Note: While it has not been revealed yet what is wrong with the atmosphere some assume it could be a toxin from the exotics that the animals have been adapted to survive.
 
 
Also there is oxygen on Icarus. If there was no oxygen then when our supply ran out we would die. Even if you run out of oxygen in your suit you still can breathe for a limited time.
 
 
5) Where is the alien on Icarus?
 
 
It was like going back in time and seeing the Earth a million years ago.

but Jesus Christ, it does your head in at first.
 
Outside the zone,
 
it was different.
 
 
Note: As you move to the less developed biomes the more alien the planet becomes. The Desert biome will be the first with more alien looking creatures.
 
 
6) What are we doing on Icarus?
 
 
I mean, without the exotics, there never would have been a first cohort.
 
Because it was all about the exotics.
 
You find them, you sell them back at the station.
 
Get more gear, you go back down, find more.
 
Drop, survive, and repeat.
 
On Icarus…
 
a handful of exotics would get you a new suit.
 
A radar, a rifle.
 
But on Earth,
 
it would buy you anything you wanted.
 
 
7) How come no comes to Icarus with money if they have the most valuable ore in the Universe?
 
 
The journey to Icarus was brutal, it was four light years from Earth.

If you couldn’t find food, you died.
 
If you couldn’t find oxygen, you died.
 
If you couldn’t find shelter from the storms…
 
you died.
 
People died on Icarus all the time, you know?

Note: Not too many people would be willing to spend 4 years of their life in deep sleep and then have a very good chance to die unless they had nothing to lose.
