The Steam version is not good. Let’s make it look better.

Playing the game in high resolution

My native resolution is 1920×1080, but the game setting only goes up to 1280×1024. That’s too square for me.

Luckily, this is where the heroic www.pcgamingwiki.com – https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Cars_Mater-National_Championship comes to the rescue. There is a section in the page called “Widescreen resolution”, where I downloaded a zip file full of different resolutions.

I then copy the Cars_Mater file and DataPC folder into where the game is installed. The game files already has these files, so I’m trying to overwrite them with the downloaded ones.

What this mod does is modify the game’s 800×600 resolution so that it tricks the game into playing in 1920×1080 when it’s told to play at 800×600. So, for this to work, I should keep the game settings at 800×600. Let’s see the results.

PS3 quality graphics

Apparently, the PS3 version of the game has the best graphics, especially better than the Xbox 360 version. The PC version is based on the Xbox 360 port, but there is a mod that lets us bring over the PS3 graphics over. However, this won’t work with current profiles. So, after you apply this mod, you should make a new profile to prevent crashing. Thanks very much to Callum273B for making this mod and letting us enjoy the game better.

Download the latest version from modcars.fandom.com – https://modcars.fandom.com/wiki/Cars:_Mater-National_-_PCS3_Edition At the time of this writing, the latest version is 1.0.2, so I’ll download that.

Just like I did with the resolution mod, I’m going to copy and paste the DataPC folder into the same place were the game’s DataPC folder is, overwriting anything similar.

Let’s see the results.

Improving anisotropic filtering

This is important. Lots of potential detail is being wastefully hidden away just because the game wasn’t made for PC as well as it should have been. What anisotropic filtering does is affect how textures look at a distance. The better the filtering, the more detail that distant textures maintain. Usually, textures get blurred at a distance to easily save computer power, but when your computer has more than enough power. no need to blur it. For some reason, the game makes the textures blur incredibly close, and unfortunately, this game doesn’t have any settings relating to anisotropic filtering, making you feel like these settings are locked. When you’re using the high resolution mod like I just did earlier, the blur will be even more noticeable.

Since this is a racing game, you’ll be seeing the road a lot, which means you’ll also be seeing ahead of you, and what does that mean? You’ll be seeing a lot of blurred texture. Here’s some examples of why it may be bothersome.

Luckily, we can just change anisotropic filtering settings through our graphics card’s control panel. I only have an NVIDIA graphics card, so I’ll show you the NVIDIA method. I first go to the control panel by either right clicking on the NVIDIA logo in the taskbar icons list, or you can just right click on the desktop wallpaper and click on NVIDIA control panel.

Go to “Manage 3D settings” on the left side, then go to the “Program Settings” tab. Select Cars Mater National from the lift of programs. If it’s not there, you can add it to the list by clicking add. Add the .exe application file of the game which is in the game’s installation folder. The icon has Mater on it.

I then apply these settings to give the best anisotropic settings possible. The settings I made are the settings in bold.

Afterwards, I click apply. Now let’s see the improvement.

Changing the field of view

The field of view basically shows how much of the screen you want to see. The bigger the field of view, the wider the camera will cover, and will potentially give that fish eye effect. Changing the field of view can also make the viewing experience better based on how far away you are from the screen. It’s pretty low in this game because when it was made for consoles, it was made based on the impression that you wouldn’t be so close to the TV, making the field of view reasonable. This field of view never bothered me, so I didn’t change it, but if you want a bigger field of view, the PCGamingWiki page I shared back at the “higher resolution” chapter shows you how to do it.
