This guide is for families that are stuck together in the same household under the same roof. IE Lan. Since the latest update for the game made a way for people with bad internet connections able to make a true Lan game and it’s not as hard as one might think.

You’ll need a few things before hand.

*A spare pc/laptop/server that you can connect to your local connection.
*The valheim dedicated server
*Port forward your router for valheims game ports.

(this guide is a WIP)

Step one: set up spare Computer/server

Okay so I’m going to try and keep this as short as possible

*On spare PC:
1. Download Steam
2:Sign into your steam account. (this won’t have an effect amazingly on your ability to play games
3. Download Valheim dedicated server

Step two: Port Forwarding

How To Forward Ports

The process for forwarding a port is usually:

1:Login to your router.
2:Locate your routers port forwarding section.
3:Put the IP address of the spare computer/host in the appropriate box.
4:Put the TCP and UDP ports for your game in the matching boxes in your router.
*Intermittently you have to reboot your router for the changes to take effect.

Ports To Forward for Valheim

TCP: 2456-2458
UDP: 2456-2458

This will help with a lot of stuttering and freezes I had at first playing multiplayer.

Step Three: Starting the server

Okay on the spare computer right click on the valheim dedicated server on steam and select browse local files.

After that you’re going to want to go ahead and edit the server to your liking.

At the time of writing this you MUST have a password normally it’s “secret”

TIP*Find out what this computers IP address as well because it’s how you’re going to connect

You can also edit the name of the server, you can also edit the name of the world “dedicated” is the standard name and that chooses the seed.

(you can also transfer a world you have already set up but theirs tutorials online for that)

You can also change the port but I generally just keep it at the original port “2456”

Step Four: joining the server

So you set up your server and got it running and you have your seed selected now you and your family just have to join up.

*on your playing PC

1:Start up valheim
2:go to join game
3:Then click join by IP
4:Now type in the host/spare pc ip followed by the port.

(i’m going to use my local ip and port as an example)

Ex.
192.168.0.21:2456

5:Then click join
6:It will ask for your password then. Type it in.

Step Five: Repeat on your family members computers

Now if everything is goin well you should all be playing. with minimal lag.

remember the machine being used to host shouldn’t be a complete potato but i’m using an hp notebook with 64 megabytes of VRAM and it’s a perfect host for two player couple coop it only lags when were really far away. So keep that in mind as a control.

good luck and happy vikings.
