The one who pulls out the sword will be crowned king Hidden Lore & Walkthrough 1 - steamsplay.com

This guide examines hidden lore and explores the identity of the one who canonically pulled out the sword from the stone and became king.

Introduction and Background

The story is set in an unnamed kingdom, presumably based on 16th century Europe, during an unspecified time. Central to the story is a sword that lies with its blade embedded in a large stone or boulder in a small wooded area just outside of the kingdom’s capital city gates.

Legend within the kingdom states that the one who pulls out the sword from the stone will be crowned king. It is not specified if the placement of the sword into the stone is related to the rule of the current king, or if the sword will be replaced into the stone once again should it be removed.

The story begins with the protagonist approaching the aforementioned sword, prepared in his attempt to pull it from the stone…

The Sword

The protagonist’s identity is not revealed at this point of the story, though it is hinted through text on the main menu that it is someone whom the player is familiar with.

The protagonist takes hold of the sword and begins to lift it from the stone. Through mystic forces, they receive distant messages of others, perhaps in a parallel universe, who have overcome the challenge of the stone. With each arcane message, the protagonist struggles, as the weight and the length of the sword’s blade magically increases.

The player is directed to continue pulling upwards on the sword, drawing it from the stone. As the hilt of the blade draws closer to the apex, an angelic choir and triumphant music can be heard in the background, as well as rays of sunlight beaming down onto the player, perhaps alluding to their apotheosis.

Finally, the sword is removed from the stone, falling unceremoniously onto the grass as the player looks on…

Coronation

After removing the sword, the protagonist is directed by a guardsman of the Kingdom towards the royal litter, where they are seated before being carried into the capital city.

As the player is brought through the city, large crowds line up on either side of the street, cheering and celebrating as the player is brought to the castle at the centre of the city, where the current king awaits.

The player is greeted by the current presiding king, who proceeds to knight the player. In an ironic twist of fate, the king is immediately arrested by his guards and is promptly executed by way of beheading with the very same sword that he had just used to dub the protagonist. It is of note that the king offers no resistance during his arrest and execution, seemingly accepting his fate. This could possibly be an allusion that the king is aware of the endless cycle that he is a part of, foreshadowing the protagonists fate.

The king’s head falls onto the ground, to which the guard then removed the fallen crown, placing it onto the head of the player, crowning them king…

The King, Revealed

After receiving the crown, the protagonist heads inside the castle, where his consecration ceremony is commencing. It is at this point that thing protagonist’s identity is revealed to the player.

Upon walking into the castle, the player notices that the portrait of the previous king is being removed, to be replaced with a portrait of the newly crowned king, me.

Canonically, I am the one who pulled out the sword and was crowned king.

Conclusion and Special Thanks

Thank you everyone for reading my guide, it took many painstaking hours of combing through lore, developer social media posts, and datamining unused files, but I think the end result was worth it. Every hidden fact and connection made really drove home the narrative for me, and really cemented this as a breathtaking, intricate world that is greater than the sum of its parts, especially for me in particular.

I highly anticipate Majorariatto’s sequel to this masterpiece and wait with bated breath as to what adventures await our hero and king, me.
