While this may seem like very meaningless advice (, it can be very helpful to write). However, many people find that taking notes on the road can be very beneficial.
This guide was created for people who think notetaking is boring and very simple. It is designed to teach, show, and demonstrate how funny, useful, and fun it is to take note after a major event on your path to 500 Days in Survival.
Why do you take notes?
Let's say that you realize that The Long Dark is an incredible game. You decide to live as long as possible to give it the best chance.
You learn and fail, try again, and finally you find the right path to that 500 Days Survived achievement. You may even get too confident and try to do it with Interloper difficulty. However, I am sure you are told by the game that Interloper is a completely different game.
After you've listened to your friends or read guides, or just tried your luck, you can also look at this guide on how you can make your experience even more enjoyable.
Let's get this straight:
- It is difficult to travel the road to Day 500. Not only by hard work, but also by discipline.
500 days in The Long Dark could easily take you as long to complete.
I'm trying to say that you might need to take some breaks in the 500 days between those 500 days. This is not a sign of weakness or shame. But what if you take 3 months worth of breaks?
Life happens. So you return to The Long Dark immediately after you've seen the Devs drop an amazing Quality of Life update. You're excited to get back to Survival and then you realize that you dropped off at a random cave somewhere in the middle of Hushed River Valley. OMG! You don't even know where you are. Your supplies are running low and you don't know where your main storage location is. But, what is the reason you are so sick? Was it a bear, a wolf or a bear? Or were you chasing after rabbits and falling off a cliff.
Inconvenient, huh.
Don't worry! The Devs of this game have made it almost impossible for you to lose track of your progress (. With a little of your own effort), they have also created a Notes section for every day. Every. Single. Day.
Make the most of your time!
How to access and what are the types of Notes?
First, you should know where you can keep your notes.
Go to your inventory and select the option in the top pane. Open book, journal thingy . You can access your Skills, Collections and Rock Caches, Logs, Stats and General Notes in this Journal.
Second, two types is a list of Notes you can take. There are:
-
Daily Notes These can be taken each day, individually)
NOTE: To create a note for a specific date, you must first select the number in your Journal and then click on the Notes pane right next to Daily Log.
-
General Notes These speak for themselves – they stay at the same spot, for good HTML17Y
Tips on how to use both types
Daily Notes
Daily Notes can be a great way of jotting down important events during your Survival walkthrough.
Let's suppose you've had a couple boring days. Now you're bored enough to forage, cook deer, or craft. So you decide to go hunting outside because you're running low on meat. A Bear suddenly appears as you are walking around. Instead of running to the nearest building and popping an emergency stim, grab your Bow and shoot it between the eyes. It's possible, but it's very risky. However, I'm sure that you would be proud of your Marksmanship.
You can take out your notebook, and mark it in. All the bears in My Save file are named Fat Mike. Let's just say:
"Was searching for Deer when Fat Mike began asking me for my autograph. Fat Mike would have no problem asking for another photograph at another date and time in another lifetime. You don't really need any Deer meat at the moment, however!
Or you have been exploring an extremely challenging area like Ash Canyon. After you have thoroughly explored the area, you can simply make a note of what your impressions are.
These are just a few ideas for when you might take Daily Notes.
- Journaling about a frightening experience
- Note the area you are marking with an "X" and write it down.
- Keep track of your inventory
- Step by step, make your future plans to move to another area.
- Your impressions about the current area: What it lacks, and what it has more of – Is it a good base?
- Write out your angry thoughts on bears and wolves
You might think I sound like your art teacher. But, honestly, you can write what you want.
General Notes
General Notes are useful for jotting down important information which can be easily found at any moment.
What if you found a second gun? Great! You don't need to bring it with you if you have 50 KG of luggage. You can write it down, and you'll feel bored whenever you feel like it!
You've discovered something you didn’t know before. Write it down! I had 420 hours in The Long Dark, and then I discovered that you can still eat Cooked, but Ruined foods.
Here are some ideas to help you organize your General Notes.
- Important information regarding useful items (A spare Rile, Mountain Rope etc.) and their location
- Useful tips you've learned on your adventures
- The total number and types of cured skins and pelts.
Closing Act
If you're sick of reading or have skipped the entire guide, I can tell you what it is in a nutshell.
Note: If you feel you are missing something in your playthrough, please write it down. Although it might not be as informative, I guarantee that your Future Self will be grateful when they return from The Long Dark to see how much fun this game was for them.
PS: This is the first Steam Guide I have ever created!
