Many mods that modify character portraits can cause them to overwrite one another. Here's how to fix it. To edit pixel artwork (Aseprite recommended.

Intro

Many character mods have custom portraits that are used for the main menu. This can lead to issues because the different modded images overwrite each other. This guide will help you to resolve this issue.

Finding the assets

To begin, open the art editing program of your choice. This guide is based on aseprite, but it should work with any other software.

To find the relevant files, go to your mods folder (Browse local files on steam, or C:\Program Files (x86 – \Steam\steamapps\common\The Binding of Isaac Rebirth\mods on windows).

Once you are there, do a search for (charactermenualt.png. If you want the tainted meal, you can follow the same steps).

Aseprite will display all of the images.

Editing the Sprites

After you have all of your sprites open in aseprite it is time to identify which one came from which mod. For example, if your sprites are open in aseprite, you'll want to figure out which one comes from which mod.
Noelle Over Isaac – [steamcommunity.com]

Once installed, you will need to find the charactermenu.png which has Noelle rather than Isaac

Next, you will need to copy Noelle’s portrait (& name) in aseprite and paste them over isaac with another sprite.

Where can you save?

Open the game, and identify which character has had their portraits changed for the mod ones. You can then find the portraits of that mod in aseprite and copy them into that image.

I.e. If Noelle was being shown in-game instead of my other costumes mods, I'd like to paste all the modded portraits of Noelle over the basegame portraits of the noelle mod.

You should now have a single sprite containing all the mod portraits. The Noelle mod would have an image with all of the modded images, as in my example.

I also recommend that you save your newly created Frankensprite somewhere else on the computer in case a mod updates overwrites it.
