The guide explains how to get The Pit up and running on Steam Deck. This is without the random crashes that can occur when using the default Proton compatibility settings.
 

Desktop mode

Put your Steam Deck into Desktop Mode
 
 
 

Compatibility Configuration

Open Steam from the taskbar. Right-click Sword of the Stars the Pit to open your list of games. Click Properties. Forcing the use (of "Proton 4.11-13" or 4.X if the exact version is not available) in your Compatibility Tab, as the image shows

To ensure that Steam has downloaded all the correct files, you can open The Pit. The game should now launch. Close the game after.
 
 

 
 
 

Install Protontricks using Discovery

Open the Discover app by clicking on the taskbar. Refer to the image below to see the icon on your taskbar
 
 
Search for and install "Protontricks".
 
 

 
 
Wait for the installation process to complete, then close Discover
 
 
 

Steam: Add Protontricks as an Non-Steam game

Open Steam from your taskbar. Click "Add a Non Steam Game …" to the "ADD A GAME" menu in steam.
 
 

 
 
Click on Protontricks to add selected programs
 
 

 
 
 

Open Protontricks in Steam (, and configure for SD Card Access)

Find Protontricks in the game list and play it

Protontricks' various steps can take a LONG while to complete. Protontricks may not be active for a few moments, but it is still running in the background. You can check Steam to confirm that it is still active.
 
 

 
 
As you go through the rest, Protontricks will display many errors like the ones below. These errors can be ignored, just press OK
 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 
 

Choose The Pit to configure

Click OK and select "Sword of the Stars: The Pit", from Protontricks.
 
 

 
 
If you don’t see The Pit in the list, but the game is already installed on your SD card then refer to the previous step.
 
 
 

Configuration Protontricks

Click OK and choose "Select default wineprefix"
 
 

 
 
Select "Install Windows DLL or component" then click OK
 
 

 
 
 

Installing dotnet40/xna40 into Winetricks default prefix

When prompted to select which packages to install, click "dotnet40", then "xna40", then click OK
 
 

 
 

 
 
You will soon see the following message advising you that the.NET installation is about to begin. Click OK

Make sure to check the screen below that shows that it was successfully installed
 
 

 
 
Eventually, you'll see the message below informing that the XNA redist installation is about to begin. Click OK
 
 

 
 
Reminder: You may see errors like the ones below when using Protontricks. Just click OK.

Make sure to check the screen below to confirm that it was successfully installed
 

 
 
 

Closing Protontricks

After the.NET or XNA installers are completed, quit Protontricks. Click "Cancel" on these two screens
 
 

 
 

 
 
Protontricks must now be closed as follows
 
 

 
 
 

You're done!

You should now have a functioning version Of The Pit running on your deck.
 
 
Exit Desktop mode and launch it from the Steam DeckUI. The game should not crash randomly after you shoot a gun (or any other problems)
 
 
IMPORTANT:
 
 
When playing on your deck, you should always specify performance options, especially for older games like this one.
 
 

• This can be done by creating a "Per-game performance profile" for The Pit and setting an (low TDP limit, i.e. 3 Watts) or more if required.
• Once you have the right settings, there shouldn't be any performance drops. You will also save a lot of batteries.
