Sea of Thieves can be a beautiful and relaxing game, when other players aren’t chasing you trying to steal your stuff. Sometimes you may just want to take in the ocean ambiance and unwind without being hassled by other players. This guide will teach you the peaceful ways of the Sea of Thieves fisherman so you too can experience the relaxing side of this game.

1. Gathering supplies

Sea of Thieves How To Make an Honest Living as a Peaceful Fisherman - 1. Gathering supplies

To be a successful fisherman, you need only two things – a storage crate, and a rowboat. No need to concern yourself with rounding up other supplies around the outpost first, you won’t be using them. Set sail immediately and begin your search at the nearest islands for your supplies.

You can save time by just buying a supply crate from the Merchant Alliance, but these are expensive and not always an option for the humble fisherman. Alternatively you can immediately scuttle your own ship – it will very often respawn at another random island and not at an outpost, and this island might already have a rowboat and supply crate waiting for you.

2. Finding a good fishing spot

Sea of Thieves How To Make an Honest Living as a Peaceful Fisherman - 2. Finding a good fishing spot

Some of the best fishing locations are actually the last places you would hang out normally. This is because these are also the last places other players are generally going to be hanging around either, leaving you alone to fish in peace. Flameheart makes for a great fishing buddy, because he doesn’t care about rowboats and his fleet will kindly alert you to any other approaching ships. Inactive forts also serve as good fishing holes. Once you learn where all the volcanos are in the Devil’s Roar, there are some nice fishing spots out there too.

3. Setting up your fishing camp

Once you have reached your chosen fishing location, it’s time to ditch your ship. Load your supply crate onto your rowboat, and either set your ship to drift off into the sunset or just scuttle the ship outright. Another player spotting your mast in the distance may attract unwanted attention, but nobody will notice a guy with a rowboat fishing on the beach at a great distance.

Next use your scope to find what direction the nearest Hunters Call outpost is in, and park your rowboat on that side of the island for your eventual getaway. Now it’s time to use your shovel to collect some bait to fish with.

Where do I find bait?

  • Earthworms: dig in grass
  • Grubs: dig in sand
  • Leeches: dig near shorelines

4. Learning the Basics

Now we are ready to begin that soothing, relaxing fishing we came here for! Just cast your line out, wait for a fish to bite, then use your WASD keys to pull your fishing rod in the opposite direction the fish swims. When the fish gets tired, hold LMB to start reeling them in. When they start fighting again, stop reeling and go back to the WASD keys again. You will have to repeat this 1-3 times to catch the fish. Depending on the bait and what region of the map you are in, you will catch different types of fish.

What bait do I use?

  • Earthworms: Plentifins, Wildsplashes, Wreckers
  • Leeches: Stormfish, Ancientscales
  • Grubs: Devilfish, Battlegills
  • No bait: Splashtails, Islehoppers, Pondies

Some fish can only be caught under special conditions. Islehoppers are only found near large islands, and Pondies are only found in island ponds. Stormfish are only found in storms, and Battlegills are only found near active forts or skeleton ship fights. There are also variants of most fish that can only be caught at night.

5. Cooking and selling your catch

Raw fish don’t sell for very much so you can substantially increase your meager profits by cooking your fish at a campfire first. Just remember this creates black smoke that other players can see, which might attract attention. Without a mast spotted near the island though, most players will usually ignore a campfire. Once all your food is cooked, load your supply crate into your rowboat, row straight to that Hunters Call outpost, and sell your bounty! Drink that cup of grog you’ve been saving just for this moment and congratulate yourself for completing a hard days work as a peaceful fisherman.

Other Tips and Advice from an Old Fisherman

  • Remember that you will respawn very far away if you die without your ship. Safety first!
  • You can collect any pigs, chicken, or snakes on the island and cook them as well, the Hunters Call will buy all of them.
  • You will level Hunters Call much faster by turning in mermaid gems over fish and cooked meat. Try to destroy as many mermaid statues as you find.
  • You can collect gunpowder barrels from skeleton spawns to help blow up mermaid statues. Just shoot them in the feet to kill them without exploding the barrel they are holding.
  • Explore the island for ammo crates to help you with skeleton spawns, don’t be a double gunning idiot and bring a sword when you fish.
  • If someone does come to your fishing island, stash your supply crate somewhere and use an emote like sleep, hide, or barrel hide and just wait for them to leave. They most likely have no idea you’re there.
  • Check the barrels and crates periodically on your island for extra supplies and move them to your storage crate or rowboat. They respawn with fresh stuff twice an hour.
  • If you somehow lose your rowboat, don’t panic and just keep fishing! Objects wash up on the beach periodically just like the barrels respawn, so a new rowboat will eventually arrive.
