Bertram is a character you meet during a Stranger mission in RDR2. He has a very unique appearance, and surprises a lot of players when they first encounter him…

Bertram performs in circus shows, which were popular (in real life) during the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States and England.
 
 
 

The Real Bertram

The character Bertram was inspired/modeled after a real life person named Schlitzie. Schlitzie was born with a condition called Microcephaly, which caused his deformities (small brain & skull). He was a popular American sideshow performer, who also appeared in a few films, one being a 1932 movie called “Freaks”.

So things in common with Bertram and Schlitzie: They both have the same facial deformities, they both have the same distinct hairstyle, and they are both circus show performers.
 
​
 
However… One major difference between the two is that Schlitzie stood at a small stature (4 feet tall), while Bertram has a very tall stature.
 
 
 

Interesting Facts

A man named George Surtees, who was a chimpanzee trainer that worked alongside Schlitzie in a circus act involving a chimp, legally adopted Schlitzie in 1935.

Schlitzie continued to perform in circus acts into his late 60’s.
