Quake Installing a Source Port – Mod and Map Guide 1 - steamsplay.com

A guide to getting the most out of the Rerelease edition and easy to follow steps on installing source ports to play custom maps, mappacks and mods!

Introduction

Hello everyone!

It’s been amazing to see old and new players coming back to check out the Quake re-release and I’m happy to see everyone enjoying it!

I’ve played and streamed a lot of Quake over the last 10 months, so I figured I’d put this guide together to cover everything from playing custom maps to setting up source ports, in case anyone wants to try out the mountain of custom content out there!

Rerelease

The rerelease is pretty awesome and I’m super excited to see so many new and old players coming along to check it out!

If you are experiencing a bunch of lag, inputting r_gpuculling 0 or 1 into the console seems to resolve it. This should get fixed in a patch!

Heres a list of all the other console commands for the KEX engine quake:

N64 Addon

If you want to play Quake64 without the CRT filtering, inputting r_crtmode 0 into the console solves this.

Immorpher64 has done a great video on how to get the video settings closer to the N64 look and feel.

Ports

At the moment, pretty much the best way to play maps and mods is with another port.

There are a huge amount of ports, all down to your personal preference so feel free to experiment!

SINGLEPLAYER

Some maps and mods require a modified Quake engine with increased limits. Try these!

Installing a source port

Pretty much as simple as

1. Choose your port

2. Put the contents into your base Quake folder

3. Run the executable!

If you want to run this through Steam, rename “glquake.exe” in your main quake folder to “glquake-OLD.exe” and rename your source ports executable (or Simple Quake Launcher) to “glquake.exe”!

My Setup

Personally, I use Quakespasm Spiked.

You can download it here:

https://triptohell.info/moodles/qss/ – [triptohell.info]

Another extremely handy tool I use is Simple Quake Launcher 2

https://github.com/m-x-d/Simple-Quake-Launcher-2 – [github.com]

It lets you select the source port, maps, difficulties, mods you have installed all from a single launcher. Just unzip the contents into your Quake folder!

Maps, Mappacks and Mods

FINDING MODS/MAPS

There are aloooooot of places you can find them, but the main place to look is https://www.quaddicted.com/ – [quaddicted.com]

It’ll tell you under “Dependencies” whether or not it also requires a mod.

INSTALLING MAPS

If it doesn’t require a mod, easy peasy – just extract it to your Id1\maps folder.

Press the tilde key to open the console and type map <mapname>, or just select it on the Simple Quake Launcher 2 menu.

If it does require a mod, put it in the mod folders map folder i.e. ad/maps/

INSTALLING MODS

Extract the folder e.g. ad to your main Quake folder.

Run the game and then put in the console “game <yourmodname>” i.e. game ad

Or just use Simple Quake Launcher, much easier 🙂
