INTRODUCTION

Even though Kubold has finally given us actual move lists in the pause menu, I am still going to keep this move list up because it has some special moves which aren’t listed in the pause menu.

All button presses are shown as if you are using an XBox controller, or at least one with the same buttons, like the Logitech gamepad I use. They are also shown as if you are Player 1 on the left side of the screen. If you

Combos vs. Chains: I am defining a “combo” as a series of attacks where the attack animations change for the second (and sometimes third) attacks in the series. I am defining a “chain” as a series of attacks which flow together naturally but the attack animations do NOT change. Lots of attacks can be chained together with each other, but they only count as “combos” if the attack animations change. For example, Jacek can use (B, X) and (A, Y), and they count as “combos” because the attack animations change. He can also use (X, Y) and (Y, X), but they count as “chains” instead of “combos” because the attack animations don’t change.

ALL CHARACTERS

When opponent does a low attack:

  • Punish (←Y or ←X): quickly pull your lead leg back, then high attack at the opponent’s head.

Long Guard (LT):

  • Low Swipe (B or A): short downward swipe, used to knock the opponent’s weapon away if they are also in Long Guard.

Close Range:

  • Hand Push (RT): push the opponent’s hand to create an opening.
  • Escape Hand Push (←←): if the opponent pushes your hand, quickly dash backwards to avoid their attacks.
  • Instant Kill (RB or LB): grab the opponent and kill them.
  • Escape Instant Kill (←): if the opponent grabs you, quickly press backwards to escape the grab.
  • Close Attack (Y, X, B, or A): punch, kick, or pommel-strike the opponent to create an opening.

My Favorite Attacks – Either Foot Forward:

  • (B) can be chained endlessly and is good for close range engagements.
  • (←B) can be chained endlessly and is good for extricating yourself from a bad situation.
  • (→→Y) is a very high-risk, high-reward move. If it hits then it’s almost always a kill, but if the opponent blocks it then it leaves you vulnerable.

My Favorite Attacks – Left Foot Forward:

  • (Y) can sometimes result in a quick kill, but it’s hard to get the range just right.
  • (→Y, →X) can be chained endlessly.
  • (→X, B) looks awesome, but can leave your head exposed.
  • (↑X) can be chained endlessly and is useful for circling your opponent.
  • (→B) is good for cutting the arms of saber users.
  • The second attack in (→B, X) has a pretty long range and is extremely effective against Marie.

My Favorite Attacks – Right Foot Forward:

  • (→Y, →Y) can be chained endlessly.
  • (A, Y) and (→A, Y) are really effective combos.
  • (Y) and (←X) can be chained after most attacks or combos.

GEDEON (SABER) PART 2

After certain attacks, Gedeon switches which foot he has forward, but unlike Isabella most of his attacks are the same or almost the same no matter which foot he has forward.

Long Guard – Right Foot Forward (LT):

  • Delayed Cut (Y): hesitate for a moment, then a short step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left.

Long Guard – Left Foot Forward (LT):

  • Cleaver (Y): short vertical slash while stepping forward with the back foot (switching feet).
  • Flat Slice (X): short step forward with a horizontal slash from left to right.
  • Crooked Thrust (→X): step forward with the back foot (switching feet), then thrust with palm up.
  • Fancy Footwork (↑Y or ↓Y): quickly switch feet, then a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left, then quickly switch feet again.

Other – Right Foot Forward:

  • Stab (↓→Y): very short step forward with a straight thrust.
  • Handslap (↑↑X): quickly switch feet, then a hop to the left and a slightly-angled (almost vertical) slash from upper left to lower right.
  • Retreat and Thrust (↓, ↓←X): hop backwards, then step forward and thrust. This move seems to be bugged because it is very hard to time the button presses just right in order to execute the move.

Other – Left Foot Forward:

  • Stab (↓→Y): quickly switch feet, then a straight thrust, then quickly switch feet again.
  • Hop and Slash (↑↑X): hop to the left, then a slightly-angled (almost vertical) slash from upper left to lower right.
  • Retreat and Thrust (↓, ↓←X): hop backwards while switching feet, then step forward and thrust. This move seems to be bugged because it is very hard to time the button presses just right in order to execute the move.
  • Laughing Slash (Y, A): small step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from lower left to upper right, then step forward with the back foot (switching feet). This looks the same as (→A), except that Gedeon does a hoarse, mocking laugh during the attack.

Combos – Either Foot Forward:

  • None found.

Chains – Either Foot Forward:

  • The in-game move list calls these “combos,” but I am calling them “chains” instead for the reasons explained in the Introduction.
  • Chain 1 (X, Y).
  • Chain 2 (Y … X): you have to put a delay between the button presses or else the second attack won’t execute.
  • Chain 3 (X, B).
  • Chain 4 (B, X).
  • Chain 5 (Y … A): you have to put a delay between the button presses. If you press the buttons too quickly then it will do the Laughing Slash (see above) instead of an attack chain.
  • Chain 6 (A, Y).
  • Chain 7 (A, B).
  • Chain 8 (B, A).

My Favorite Attacks – Either Foot Forward:

  • Basically all variations of High Right (Y, →Y, ←Y, ↑Y, and ↓Y) are effective and useful in multiple situations.
  • My favorite attack chains are (X, Y) and (→X, →Y).

  • (↑X) and (↓Y) are useful when trying to circle your opponent.
  • (X) in Long Guard is very hard for the opponent to block.
  • (→→Y) is effective for closing distance quickly.

  • One, Two, One (→Y, X, Y): small step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left, then another small step forward with a diagonal downward slash from upper left to lower right, then another small step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left.
  • One, Two, Three (→Y, X, B): small step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left, then another small step forward with a diagonal downward slash from upper left to lower right, then another small step forward with a diagonal upward slash from right left to upper left.

My Favorite Attacks:

  • (Y) is a really strong basic attack.
  • (↑X) and (↓Y) are useful when trying to circle your opponent.
  • (X) in Long Guard is very hard for the opponent to block.
  • (→→Y) is effective for closing distance quickly.

MARIE (RAPIER)

As one might expect, Marie’s best attacks are thrusts. Her slashes tend to be slow and not very useful.

Basic Attacks:

  • High Right (Y): over-the-head slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left.
  • High Left (X): straight thrust.
  • Low Right (B): reach slightly to the right and thrust.
  • Low Left (A): slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from lower left to upper right.

Moving Forward (→):

  • High Right (→Y): step forward and straight thrust.
  • High Left (→X): step forward and slightly to the right, while reaching to the left to thrust.
  • Low Right (→B): tiny step forward and thrust at a slight angle.
  • Low Left (→A): deep lunge while reaching slightly to the left to thrust.

Moving Backward (←):

  • High Right (←Y): tiny step backward and straight thrust.
  • High Left (←X): small step backward with a high thrust.
  • Low Right (←B): small hop backward with an over-the-head slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left.
  • Low Left (←A): small step backward, draw the rapier back and then thrust low.

Moving Left (↑):

  • High Right (↑Y): over-the-head slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left. This is the same as (Y).
  • High Left (↑X): step to the left with a diagonal downward slash from upper left to lower right.
  • Low Right (↑B): step to the left with a long diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left.
  • Low Left (↑A): awkward-looking thrust and then a stumbling step to the left.

Moving Right (↓):

  • High Right (↓Y): step to the right, draw the rapier back and then thrust.
  • High Left (↓X): full-extension reach and thrust then a step to the right.
  • Low Right (↓B): small step to the right with a low horizontal slash from right to left.
  • Low Left (↓A): step to the right with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper left to lower right.

High Guard (LT):

  • Quick Swipe (Y): over-the-head slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left. This looks almost the same as her normal (Y), except that it’s slightly faster.
  • Downwards Cut (X): downward vertical slash, then recover to the right.
  • Pierce (→Y): step forward and straight thrust. This looks the same as her normal (→Y).
  • Snap Thrust (→X): straight thrust. This looks the same as her normal (X).

Other:

  • All In (→→A): dash forward then straight thrust.
  • Leg Swipe (↓→B): step forward with a long diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left.
  • Countertime (↓→Y): step forward while circling the tip of the rapier, then thrust.
  • Hop and Thrust (↓←X): hop backward then thrust.

Combos:

  • High Combo (Y, Y): over-the-head slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to lower left, then a small step forward and a thrust.

My Favorite Attacks:

  • (→Y) is really good. You can win the majority of your fights with just this one attack.
  • (X), (→X), (B), and (→B) are good for times when (→Y) isn’t working, or if you’re just getting bored with only using one attack.

LASZLO (SABER)

While Laszlo’s move-set does share some things with Jacek and Barabasz, he also has plenty of moves which are unique to him.

  • High Left (X): swiping attack from upper left to lower right.
  • Low Right (B): diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left.
  • Low Left (A): slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from center left to upper right.

Moving Forward (→):

  • High Right (→Y): step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left.
  • High Left (→X): step forward with a diagonal downward slash from upper left to lower right.
  • Low Right (→B): step forward with a diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left.

  • Low Left (←A): step backward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from center left to upper right.

Moving Left (↑):

  • High Right (↑Y): tiny step to the left with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left.

  • Low Right (↑B): awkward-looking step to the left, then a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from center right to upper left.
  • Low Left (↑A): small step to the left with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from center left to upper right.

Moving Right (↓):

  • High Right (↓Y): small step to the right with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left.
  • High Left (↓X): small step to the right with a swiping attack from upper left to center right.
  • Low Right (↓B): small step to the right with a diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left.
  • Low Left (↓A): small step to the right with a short diagonal upward slash from lower left to center.

Long Guard (LT):

  • Lunge (Y or X): deep lunge forward and thrust.
  • Parry and Riposte (↓B): guard the head, then a diagonal downward slash from upper right to lower left.
  • Quick Back Edge (↓→Y): short vertical upward slash with the back edge.

Combos:

  • Combo 3 (A, Y): slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from center left to upper right, then a high horizontal slash from upper right to upper center.
  • Combo 6 (B, B): diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left, then a tiny step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) back-edge cut from lower right to upper center.
  • Wrist Hinge (→Y, X): step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper right to center left, then another step forward with a slightly-angled (almost horizontal) slash from upper left to center right.
  • Up and Thrust (→B, A): step forward with a diagonal upward slash from lower right to upper left, then another step forward and thrust with the palm up.
  • Low-High Combo (→A, Y): step forward with a horizontal slash from left to right, then a diagonal downward slash from upper right to lower left.

Chains:

  • The in-game move list calls these “combos,” but I am calling them “chains” instead for the reasons explained in the Introduction.
  • Chain 1 (Y, X).
  • Chain 2 (X, Y).
  • Chain 4 (Y, A).
  • Chain 5 (X, B).

My Favorite Attacks:

  • (→Y) has long reach and a high chance of hitting the opponent even through their block.
  • (→Y, X) is a great combo because the first attack is already good by itself, but then the second attack comes out really quickly.
  • A lot of Laszlo’s attacks chain together really well, even if they don’t count as defined “combos.” Moving from a sidestep attack to a forward or backward attack works surprisingly well.
