Based on the player’s actions, the events of the game will change or happen in different ways. A few paths have been identified so far, each resulting in different dialogue and endings, as well as secrets.
PLEASE NOTE: Because every action changes the story, it can be very difficult to distinguish between paths and their causes. For this reason, the contents of this page are more speculative than other pages.
The Main paths seem to have the largest role in the story of the game. The main paths depend on the variable “Fear” that the player accumulates by choosing negative choices. Fear accumulated in different acts is separate and restarts at the start of each act. There is no middle ground between these paths.
The Glowbringer path is activated when the player has low fear. A large push towards the Glowbringer path (In act 1) is when Lore feeds Baron the Viking Feast Dog Food. On this path, Lore takes on his Glowbringer form and speaks in Guardian Glyphs when trying to defeat The Artifact. He also takes on this form right before initiating the fight in The Tower but doesn’t speak in Guardian Glyphs.
The Darksider path is activated when the player has high fear. A large push towards the Darksider path (in act 1) is when Lore feeds Baron the garbage and throwing out the Viking Feast Dog Food. On this path, Dark Lore appears much earlier and more frequently. On this path, Lore takes on his dark form and speaks in Darksider Glyphs when trying to defeat The Artifact. He also takes on this form right before initiating the fight in The Tower but doesn’t speak in Darksider Glyphs.
The Jotunheim paths describe what version of Jotunheim the player ends up in .
The Niflheim path seems to be activated when the curiosity value is low. On this path, Lore travels to Niflheim rather than Muspelheim. It is unknown if Lore will still go to Muspelheim when on this path.
The Muspelheim path seems to be activated when the curiosity value is high. On this path, Lore travels to Muspelheim rather than Niflheim. It is unknown if Lore will still go to Niflheim when on this path.
The so-called “Portal paths” describe the order in which Lore visits each world. Although their status as paths is debatable, they are as follows:
Animus -> Tower Corp -> Jotunheim
Animus -> Jotunheim -> Tower Corp
Tower Corp -> Animus -> Jotunheim
Tower Corp -> Jotunheim -> Animus
Jotunheim -> Animus -> Tower Corp
Jotunheim -> Tower Corp -> Animus
Prior to Patch 1.0.8b (but not Patch 1.0.3b), the Jotunheim Paths were determined by if the stove in Lore’s house is turned on
The Muspelheim path would be activated if you turned the stove on.
The Niflheim path would be activated if you left the stove off.
The way the Jotunheim paths are currently activated were the same before patch 1.0.3b before switching over to being activated by the stove.
