Nightmare is HARD! Here is a tried and true tested strat by my group of three (Could easily be adapted for groups of two or four), and is pretty much foolproof unless you have bad luck!

Intro

Alright! So my group was struggling to finish the maps on hard, let alone nightmare. We figured out this strat that could be done even with two players!
For solo players, I’m sorry, I have no advice for you. But for groups of two or more, here it is:

I’ll write out instructions for each one, but it’s pretty much the same idea for both.

FARMHOUSE

Setup (Before you start sacrificing):

  • Gather 10 gasoline jugs by the altar.
  • Throw all available hay in the backyard, right outside the basement door. This will make more sense later.
  • Place all 6 medkits in the altar area, the best place is right behind the little shelter there. I believe only 6 spawn at a time, but if you can find more, move them!
  • Sweep through the house, DO NOT SACRIFICE ANY GOATS YET, unlock every door, gather every key, unlock BOTH goat cages.
  • Catch the goats, place 1 in the altar, DO NOT LIGHT. Place all the rest in the cellar, this is that little hidden-ish door in the basement. Make sure you be careful each time you go to place or grab a goat! This is why we have hay outside.
  • As extra safe measure, close the door that leads from the basement up into the house. If a goat does manage to escape, its choices are the basement, or outside, where it’ll get distracted by hay.

So now you’re all set up. Grab as many goats as you can (Remember one person has to light the altar), chain sacrifice them. Now, each person splits off into roles and the hunt begins.
Roles:
Medic– Stay behind the little shelter by the altar, crouch, lights off. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR POST.
Sacrificer– Disregard your life, it no longer matters. Just focus on sacrificing goats.
Supply Gatherer– Make sure there is a nice supply of medkits for the medic, since it’s important that they stay in one spot. Other than that, gather hay for the sacrificer.
Extra– Help the sacrificer, supply person, or go around burning/distracting Anna or the demons.

If you’re a group of two, one person will be a medic, and the other will have to play all the roles. In groups of three, the third can alleviate some trouble for the sacrificer. Groups of four have it best.

Things and tips to keep in mind on Nightmare:
-You have no UV light, you cannot stun Anna, and you cannot burn demons. There seems to be less of them, but one catch and you’re done.
-You can KIND OF trap demons in rooms. However, Anna opened a door after some time, so don’t waste too much doing this.
-Demons have a short aggro range when your light is off and you’re crouched, so try to stay like this for as long as possible. You can tell when a demon is aggro’d because they will get up on all fours and chase after you, as opposed to dragging themselves on the ground.
-If demons start to gather in the backyard, have someone lead them to the front yard, then lose them. They might eventually wander their way back, but they’ll be out of your hair for a while.
-YOUR MEDIC IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON. They need to stay behind that shelter so no demons/Anna aggro on them. Don’t make them leave the altar area at all. As long as they’re alive, and supplied with medkits, your team has a fighting chance. If a demon gets a little too close in the altar area, pull them away.
-A stray goat will eat all the placed hay in the vicinity, so keep an eye on the buggers!
-The demons will speed up and spawn in higher amounts as more goats are sacrificed.
-When someone goes down, have this person crawl back to the medic. The other person needs to ignore them completely and focus on sacrifices/gathering supplies.

The idea is that as long as one person hangs back in a safe spot with medkits, the others can die endlessly with no consequence (other than having to get more kits). Doing this, you should have an easy peasy time getting through Nightmare!

As long as you follow this, you’ll be all good! Once my trio tried this strategy, we finally beat farmhouse on Nightmare, and then beat Asylum on Nightmare on our first try. Speaking of Asylum, it does have a few differences, so I’ll write that out as well, but it does have the same idea.

ASYLUM

Asylum is pretty similar to Farmhouse, with just a few differences! For instance, you can’t really trap the rats here, so I wouldn’t even bother trying.

Setup:

  • Initiate the round by electricuting the corpse in the basement, some doors remain locked until this happens.
  • Gather 10 fuses by the electroshock therapy machine.
  • Throw all found food in front of the fireplace, this doesn’t really have a purpose like the hay does, it’s just convenience.
  • Place all found medkits in the altar room, tucked away to the left of the fuse box. There is definitely more than 6, just try to gather up as much as you can.
  • Sweep through the asylum, DO NOT SACRIFICE ANY RATS YET, unlock every door, gather every key, knock down all THREE trash cans.
  • Place extra fuses as “guides” for high traffic areas that are dark. Especially the room right outside the basement room.
  • Almost there, catch 1 rat, place it in the bed, but do not start until you’re ready. When you are ready, have each person sacrifice a rat and assume your roles!

Roles:
The roles are the same as for Farmhouse, but just in case you didn’t read them:
Medic– Stay by the altar in a little hidey spot, crouch, lights off. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR POST.
Sacrificer– Disregard your life, it no longer matters. Just focus on sacrificing rats.
Supply Gatherer– Make sure there is a nice supply of medkits for the medic, since it’s important that they stay in one spot. Other than that, gather hay for the sacrificer.
Extra– Help the sacrificer, supply person, or go around burning/distracting Molly or the demons.

If you’re a group of two, one person will be a medic, and the other will have to play all the roles. In groups of three, the third can alleviate some trouble for the sacrificer. Groups of four have it best.

Things and Tips that are different from Farmhouse:
-It’s a lot harder to trap the demons in rooms, so probably just don’t bother.
-Demons can spawn in the altar room, so be careful when entering. Molly will also enter when she is in aggro mode.
-The rats wander a lot more and are harder to spot, and they WILL eat all your gathered food, so keep an eye out!
-There are lots of opportunities to jump down from the higher floors, this is useful if you get cornered or are being chased!

And then just as a repeat, in case you didn’t read the Farmhouse tips I gave:
-You have no UV light, you cannot stun Molly, and you cannot burn demons. There seems to be less of them, but one catch and you’re done.
-Demons have a short aggro range when your light is off and you’re crouched, so try to stay like this for as long as possible.
-YOUR MEDIC IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON. They need to stay behind so no demons/Molly aggro on them. Don’t make them leave the altar area at all. As long as they’re alive, and supplied with medkits, your team has a fighting chance. If a demon gets a little too close in the altar area, pull them away.
-The demons will speed up and spawn in higher amounts as more rats are sacrificed.
-When someone goes down, have this person crawl back to the medic. The other person needs to ignore them completely and focus on sacrifices/gathering supplies.

Conclusion/TLDR

TLDR:
First off, read, you nerd.
But anyway, in short, just prep before you sacrifice and have a medic hang back to heal.

Basically, this strategy depends on four factors:
1. There is a medic, who is kept safe, and supplied with medkits.
2. When others die, they are ignored by the other teammates and crawl to the medic
3. Everyone crouches and does not use their flashlight
4. A good setup is key!

End Note:
This was effective as of 4/28/21, future updates may make Nightmare easier or harder, or some of these strategies may be considered exploits, and get patched. If you need help, feel free to drop a comment and I’ll try to assist the best I can, but it’s pretty straight forward. If you’re on solo, I don’t have any advice for you, as the entire strategy is based around having a person sit back and do basically nothing the whole time.
Good luck, and happy sacrificing!
