Deep Rock Galactic Tips - tricks and tactics - Introduction

Rock and stone fellow dwarves, welcome to Hoxxes IV! This guide is simply a list of tips for things that may or may not be immediately obvious.

Use the menu on the right to quickly jump between sections.

To keep repetition to a minimum, class based benefits that effect the team are listed under ‘General’ (because everyone needs to know that stuff), and class based actions that only effect that specific individual are listed under ‘Class’.

Comment below if you spot anything wrong or have anything to add.

General (part 1)

  1. Scoutsand Engineersshould be bestest dwarven buddies. Spotted a resource out of reach? No problem. Engineerfires a platform underneath it, Scoutgrapples up and grabs the ore from the safety of the ledge, and while he does that the Engineergoes looking for more resources. Rinse and repeat.
  2. The Gunner’szip lines make excellent safety spots for everyone to recover shield power while an attack is in progress, so long as it’s sufficiently high above ground. You can just tap ‘e’ (PC) to switch directions to stay in the safe part. Hell, you can conduct entire battles just dangling from a rope. When you’re short to start with, any height advantage helps!
    • Be considerate though, don’t get in the Gunner’s way if he’s raining down hell from a zip line.
    • Be aware that projectile shots from enemies can knock you off the zip line, and if the height is great enough you can die.
  3. Last dwarf standing when your team is down? Don’t be afraid to run away kiting the enemy to thin them out. This can also pull the enemies away from your fallen comrades, allowing you to circle back and maybe buy enough time to revive one or more. Especially true of Scoutsprudently using their grappling hook to move.
  4. If you get grabbed by a deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Cave_Leech, immediately announce it in chat! Otherwise your squad mate will come to revive you and die the same way! If you’re lucky and happen to pass by a zip line once seized, you can escape by grabbing the zip line.
  5. Remember to always look up before getting near a downed dwarf, just in case they were taken out by a Cave Leech and haven’t told you (or you missed the message).
  6. Try and use all your ammo from all weapons before restocking, to maximise how far the Nitra will go. Sometimes there’s just not enough!
  7. Always call down a resupply (or two) before a major battle, such as when the pumps start running (On-Site Refining mission) or before a boss fight (Elimination mission).
  8. If you can’t afford to call down a resupply before a major battle, don’t start the battle until you can.
  9. To maximise your team defence, try and group near an Engineer’s turret(s).
  10. Only an Engineercan place a turret, but anyone can build it. The more builders the faster it goes.
  11. When you summon the drop pod, the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/M.U.L.E. will leave a trail of green beacons with arrows pointing the way back to the pod. But always stick as a group so no-one gets isolated and killed, or stuck because they can’t traverse the scenery.
  12. Never summon the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Drop_Pod during an attack as it will add a limitless supply of enemies.
  13. On an egg hunt, never take a second egg while a previous attack is still underway (unless agreed before hand). At higher levels this becomes critical.
    • Note there are limited swarms per Egg Hunt. 4 eggs = 1 swarm, 6 eggs = 2, 8 eggs = 3. But you will always get a small group as well as the main swarm, so take care at all times.
  14. Your first duty is to your fellow dwarves. Always revive them as a priority if downed. But there are exceptions;
    • If you are extracting and have made it to the drop pod. Going back for a downed team mate is damned heroic, but could cause the failure of the mission.
    • If reviving him means you get badly hurt or downed yourself.
  15. If a dwarf gets downed in battle, the enemies will often target him. But he can’t be hurt, so use this to your advantage – feel free to throw heavy ordnance at him with impunity to clear out the infestation, or simply revive him as if they are attacking him they will not be attacking you. Just note that they WILL attack you once the revive is complete.
  16. Did you know you can heavily damage any creature by dropping a stalactite on it’s head? Hard to do, but true. Only in certain biomes such as Salt Pits and Glacial Strata though.
  17. Is it worth mining more than is asked for, or more than you need? In terms of the basic material you’ve been asked to mine (e.g. morkite), you get 1 bonus XP for every unit mined (+mission modifiers), so up to you on that one really. Gold gives a money bonus so that’s always worth it. Nitra also gets the +1 XP bonus, but you don’t get to keep it, so use it in-mission for resupplies. So is it worth mining it? Depends on how hard you have to look vs just running another mission. And also ask yourself, if you don’t mine everything, are you even really a dwarf?
  18. Once unlocked you can trade your minerals at the cleverly named ‘mineral trader’, located just to the left of the cosmetics shop.
  19. Do promote your classes as soon as you get the chance (class level 25), there is literally no downside, and you get an extra Perk slot for that class the first time you promote it.
  20. Your deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Laser_Pointer really helps focus fire in frantic firefights. Use it, a lot. It helps highlight key targets other team members may not be aware of yet. And note that you don’t need to wait for the animation of drawing out the laser to occur. Just press your assigned laser point button and fire. So long as your target was in the centre of the screen, it will be selected.
  21. Ctrl + left click an Engineerplatform to check if the Engineer has equipped fall damage reduction.
  22. Spam jump to get up near vertical surfaces. I also think mining as you do so allows you to traverse walls you could not otherwise jump up, but more testing needed.
  23. Mining the center of radioactive crystals kills their irradiating effect.
  24. Crystals that hurt you, also hurt enemies.
  25. You can mine teammates out of the frozen state.
  26. Mined minerals count if you have deposited them, or if you make it to the drop pod with whatever’s in your pockets. This excludes secondary objective items and large items such as resource chunks, they must be deposited before leaving to count.
  27. Tap the laser pointer button to keep an eye/find out where your teammates are, see their ammo levels, and see how much the team has deposited (mainly useful for checking Nitra stocks).
  28. A Gunner’sdeeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Shield_Generator is not completely invulnerable. Anything that gets through hits at 50% of normal damage. Examples…
  29. When browsing the mission selector on the Space Rig, you will get a longer list of games to join if you click on ‘Server List’ in the bottom right corner. This is because the mission selection cycles every 30 minutes, and viewing the server list shows all missions regardless of which map cycle they are from. If you just click on a specific mission on the map and click ‘Join’, you will only get the current map list.

General (part 2)

  1. There are multiple ways you can negate all fall damage from any height which are;
  2. Axes can be walked on so can be used as platforms if no other option is available.
  3. Pressing <spacebar> while on the terrain map will orient the map to the direction you are facing.
  4. The M.U.L.E. sometimes gets stuck when you call for the Drop Pod, going round in circles. There are 3 things you can do;
    • Dig the ground out from under it. This can force the AI to replot its course.
    • Engineers can build platforms on the ground it keeps covering. This can force the AI to replot its course.
    • If all else fails, the Drop Pod will open its doors with 10 seconds left on the clock. So get to the Drop Pod, dig in, and dive in at the end of the countdown.
  5. Press <ctrl> <e> To place a permanent waypoint, only visible to you, and only visible when you use your laser pointer or map. You can only create one waypoint, any new one will replace the previous.
  6. See a fun fact about yourself – on the Space Rig walk into the infirmary, down the ramp and turn 90 degrees to your right. On the wall will be a panel with your ‘Employee notes’. See what it says about you 🙂

Special resources (large chunks)

TL;DR:
Look for small clusters of blue, pink, gold or green coloured crystals or black spheres (which are themselves small), and dig in the middle. Loot what you find.

For those who need more;
As far as I know these items don’t have a group name, so for ease I will refer to them as resource ‘chunks’ here.

Scattered randomly throughout the biomes, and except for the Aquarks, chunks are always separate from the objectives and instead give a bonus at the end of the mission or are used for crafting. These items can be found buried beneath the surface where telltale surface fragments and faint glows show, and it’s important to know what the signs are and to keep your eyes open even in the gloom. The surface fragments are not what you’re after though (and you can’t collect them), you must dig in the middle of the cluster to find a single large chunk of resource, which is deposited in the M.U.L.E., Drop Pod or Mine Head just like anything else. Collecting these will award you with bonus experience and/or money.

The exception is Aquarq, which is only ever present when it is an objective, so provides no additional benefits over the basic mission completion.

You can only carry one at a time and you can’t shoot, run, and can barely jump. About all you can do is throw a flare, walk slowly, and of course throw the chunks, but by all that’s dark you look so Dwarfly!. Good news is that you can use zip lines while carrying one.

The chunks are heavy and slow you down, and normally can’t be thrown very far. However the secondary bonuses of the following 2 perks may help. That said there are always other perks that are better to take, in this guide writer’s humble opinion.

See lower down for how to throw further with or without these perks.

Aquarq
Aquarq’s are only ever present when they are the main objective. As such they are the easiest to find as they are guaranteed to appear, and have the most prominent appearance. Look for a group of scattered blue fragments and a blue glow in the rock surface.deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Aquarq.

Compressed Gold
These can be found in all biomes. Look for a group of scattered gold fragments. The glow is very faint, you need it to be practically dark to see it. The Gold Rush mutator drastically increases the size and amount of gold veins that spawn in the caves. deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Gold

Deep Rock Galactic Tips - tricks and tactics Deep Rock Galactic Tips - tricks and tactics

Jadiz
Jadiz can only be found in the Crystalline Caverns, Hollow Bough, and occasionally in the Fungus Bogs. Look for the telltale green glow in the rock surface, and small green surface crystals.deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Jadiz.

Enor Pearl
Worth just 2 XP to collect, it’s main benefit is in crafting back at base. Keep an eye out for small black near spherical shapes on the surface. They are found in the Salt Pits, Sandblasted Corridors, and sometimes in the Radioactive Exclusion Zone. deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Enor_Pearl.

Bittergem
These are worth a lot of money (over 1,000 credits) but are very rare (about 5% chance of spawning). Look for pink crystals on the surface and if dark, a telltale glow. deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Enor_Pearl.

How to throw chunks properly
You have 3 options for throwing a heavy object, listed below in order of least to most difficult, which inversely relates to how far you can throw.

  • Switch weapon or use your laser pointer to drop it at your feet.
  • Press ‘mine’ (default right mouse button on PC) quickly to throw it a little, or press and hold ‘mine’ to throw it much further. The most efficient way to move a chunk by hand is doing a big power throw this way and then running, picking it up, and throwing it again. The same can be done with the fire button, but it’s better to get used to right clicking as the same thing works on Doretta’s fuel tanks, but firing activates the laser instead of throwing.
  • But to throw it furthest of all, flick the mouse right before you throw. The items retain the momentum of your throwing action, enabling you to yeet that lump much farther than normal. www.speedrun.com – https://www.speedrun.com/Deep_Rock_Galactic/run/zp0p7qnm starting at 1 minute in. It needs a low ping to work though (so being the host really helps). It does not work for anything not carried externally such as flares, (though they do maintain the momentum of your basic movement). – Looks like this was patched out at some point.

Solo?
Just remember, if you’re playing solo, you can laser point and click on the telltale surface deposits and Bosco will dig them out and carry them to you. Press ‘Shout’ (default <x> on PC) to have Bosco throw the item to you if in range, or drop it if out of range.

Classes

Driller

  • Your drills can instantly destroy deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Spitball_Infector and deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Korlok_Tyrant-Weed ranged attacks, plus the rocks that attack Doretta when on an Escort Duty mission, insta-killing them. This can be a little risky though, so use with caution.
deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://www.reddit.com/r/DeepRockGalactic/comments/luc882/dont_fear_the_rocks_drill_them/, a driller with full fuel can tunnel around 100-150 metres, useful when in a complex cave system. Distance will vary on your build. Just check the map before drilling so choose the most efficient root, and also to not drill high through a wall into a chamber and plummet to your death. Only an idiot would do that. Ahem.
  • If you throw an Impact Axe and miss, you can go and retrieve it.
  • Impact Axes that don’t hit an enemy can be stood on, so can be used as makeshift platforms.
  • Impact Axes can be used to destroy terrain features — for free! Those fart shrooms in Fungus Bogs? Impact Axe will cut a wide swath through them and get rid of the pesky things. There’s a few other plants you can do the same to, such as those in Dense Biozone. The best part is that it doesn’t use any ammo and they can be retrieved afterwards because it doesn’t count as hitting an enemy.
  • Frozen flying enemies die instantly.
  • Once you hit driller level 18 and have unlocked the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Experimental_Plasma_Charger, you can mine with it, though it takes some skill and burns secondary ammo. In the last tier of upgrades for the weapon, the second item is called ‘Thin Containment Field’. Pick this, then to mine hold the fire button down until 3 green bars appear on the weapon, and release. This fires a plasma ball. Press the fire button again to fire a single shot targeting the plasma ball, and when it hits it creates a large explosion area. Any mineral veins in this explosion are instantly mined and drop to the floor for easy collection. This means you can mine hard to reach veins without even moving, but it takes some practice. If the plasma ball hits a surface before your follow up shot hits it, nothing will happen.
  • If you throw your C4 in the air you can hit it with a Impact Axe. This causes the C4 to ‘float’ in that position meaning less of the explosion is lost to the floor. You can even retrieve the axe. Do not have the ‘Volatile Compound’ mod for C4 equipped when you try this!
  • If you need to resupply but still have 4 or more axes left, you can throw them in the ground and retrieve them later. This helps prevent ammo/Nitra wastage during resupply.

Engineer

  • If you need to guard a particular point and there are holes in the walls near you, use platforms to block the holes. This gives you more time to see the enemies coming and reduces confusion in battles. Enemies will not dig through your platforms. Don’t forget to re-block the holes if explosions open them up.
  • Your platforms can make building pipelines in difficult terrains much easier, don’t forget to help out by putting them in convenient places to build pipes on.
  • Use platforms to create a safe place to stand when surrounded by damaging terrain such as lava.
  • If you have two sentries placed, you can select to place another and it will automatically pack up the first one you placed and move it to the newly selected location.
  • You can reload other people’s sentries
  • You can pick up your unexploded proximity mines
  • Recalling your sentries (hold the reload button) automatically reloads them (if you have enough ammo)
  • If you use the Repellant Additive mod for your deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Platform_Gun, you can create routes that force the enemies to take a longer path, giving you more time to fight them at range, or funnel them into small areas (kill boxes) making them easier to mow down with area-of-effect weapons. Just note if they have no other option the bugs will use the platforms.

Gunner

Scout

Missions

Escort Duty

  1. When Doretta is moving, the more dwarves near her, the faster she moves. This is indicated by arrows in the top right corner of the screen. It may be tempting to leave Doretta to fight bugs, or to grab resources in that cave you are not stopping in, but it’s more ammo/Nitra efficient to get Doretta to her next stopping point as fast as possible otherwise you give bugs more chance to continue spawning. Once Doretta stops you can go back to get any resources from previous caves.
  2. On deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Escort_Duty missions, before you activate Doretta you can manually drill through to the next section and clear it out in relative safety. A Drillerclass makes this task much easier. The advantage here is Doretta is invincible until you ‘unpack’ her, so you can mine and gather without having to babysit her.
  3. In the last section (when you reach the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Ommoran_Heartstone core)

Point Extraction

  1. A Gunner’s zip lines are great for moving the chunks over large distances, uphill, over chasms and other awkward terrain.

On-site Refining

  1. When riding the pipelines you can hold <shift> to orient yourself in the direction of travel.
  2. When riding the pipelines you can hold ‘use’ (default <e> on PC) to stop at the next junction that needs building. Keep holding it to start building (so long as you’re looking at the build icon on the pipe at the time).
  3. And finally, you can combine both by holding <shift> + <e> which will face you in the direction of travel, stop at the next section to be built/fixed, and start building it!
  4. If a pipe has an interaction option (i.e. build or repair), then tapping ‘use’ (default <e> on PC) just as you grind over it makes you grind much faster. Pressing ‘use’ again does nothing; the only way to stop is to jump off. It’s especially great for climbing uphill.

Perks

Etiquette

If you want to be a proper dwarf there are a few unwritten rules that some people will insist on. None of this is written in stone (or rock for that matter) but is worth doing to keep other dwarves happy.

  • Ask before calling the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Drop_Pod. You may not be aware if everyone has finished gathering. Members of your team may just have caught onto a lost artifact and are looking for it etc, so it just pays to ask. If no-one answers after a suitable time then go for it.
  • When calling for resupply, press the scanner button (default <ctrl> on PC) and look under each dwarves name. There will be a series of 4 small boxes. These indicate how much ammo each player has (25%/50%/75%/100%). Try to only call when enough dwarves are low on ammo, and try to bring it down in an area you will either be at for a while, in combat at (e.g. leviathan egg), or visit often (e.g. at a deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Minehead). You may even want to just check if people want the drop or not. Dwarves have been kicked from groups for less, especially in hazard 5 missions.
  • Something good happened? Press ‘emote’ (default <v> on PC). Just do it, it’s your duty miner. For Karl!
  • Don’t walk in front of someone shooting. I mean duh!
  • Effective teams don’t care who gets the highest kill number, or the most mined resources. Leave your ego in the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Drop_Pod and play for the team, not yourself. You don’t get any more XP or money for it, the rewards are shared.

Enemies

Korlok Tyrant-Weed

To kill this bad boy, you must kill the heads of the Korlok Sprouts. When enough have been killed the Korlok Tyrant-Weed will open up and you must lay on as much pain to the inside of the weed as quickly as you can. Rinse and repeat until dead.

When taking on a Korlok Tyrant-Weed you will sometimes see a kind of purple rainbow leading to it. Follow that to find the small flower at the other end, and destroy it ASAP as it’s a Korlok Healing Sprout. This is something that will quickly heal the Korlok Tyrant-Weed, but only to a maximum of filling the health bar the level is currently within (i.e. up to 100%/66%/33% health). The healing pods are your priority target in this fight.

The Drillercan dig tunnels under the weed as places to recover shields, and shoot safely at healing pods.

Glyphid Crassus Detonator

This golden bad boy leaves behind a large crater lined with mineable gold when killed. To maximise the amount of gold you get, kite it into a narrow space or tunnel as the gold will only form where the explosion comes into contact with scenery.

Trivia time – this creature is probably named after the Roman en.wikipedia.org – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Licinius_Crassus.

Huuli Hoarder

For the rare Huuli Hoarder, it’s best to ensure you team up if possible as they can run away quickly. Don’t panic shoot if you see one. They are only running away if they are screaming. If they are screaming, let rip. Don’t forget to mark it with your laser pointer. They will disappear forever if they don’t take damage for a few seconds, or get too far away.

Dreadnaught bosses

For Dreadnaught bosses on Elimination missions, copious use of the laser pointer is advised. The twin Dreadnaughts can regularly dive underground disappearing, but the laser pointer highlight will persist making it much easier to spot them when they resurface, which could easily be out of your direct line of sight. Do it for the single Dreadnaught too, as in the frantic cat-and-mouse chases it can be easy to lose sight of them.

If being chased/targeted by any type of Dreadnaught, run away from your team mates! This helps them avoid being collateral damage to area of effect attacks, and allows them to shoot it in the butt.

Flowers and BEER!

Wondering what all those flowers and things are you keep collecting? You can use them, along with cold hard cash, to unlock recipes and buy beers in the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Abyss_Bar on the mining rig.

These drinks have various effects, some of which are very beneficial to missions, and some are more specifically suited to certain missions than others. However they only give the buffs when they are the drink on ‘special’. You can see which one this is on the advertising board to the left of the bar, or by interacting with the barman if you have the Special slot unlocked. When you select the Special the benefits of the buff are listed.

The ones that matter (because they give buffs) are;

  • Backbreaker Stout. 1.3225x carry movement speed. Useful for Egg Hunts and Point Extraction.
  • Dark Morkite. 1.44x Morkite mined. Useful for Mining Expedition mission types.
  • Pots O’ Gold. 4x gold mined. Useful anywhere, but even more so when the Gold Rush mutator is present.
  • Red Rock Blaster. 1.69x health. Useful for high level missions
  • Rocky Mountain. -2 pickaxe hit per terrain. Works only on normal rock, requiring fewer hits to destroy it.
  • Skull Crusher Ale. +20 base pickaxe damage
  • Slayer Stout. 0.25 pickaxe power attack cooldown
  • Tunnel rat. -60% fall damage. Useful for Scouts with suicidal tendencies.

Effects persist through Deep Dives, but the effects can never be stacked, so choose wisely. Or drunkly. Whatever I’m not your parent.

Solo play

  1. deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/APD-B317 (better known as Bosco) is your bestest buddy. He can mine anything, do significant damage to enemies, light up an area, carry eggs and chunks, and revive you.
  2. Bosco can be upgraded back at the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Space_Rig. The terminal is located just to the left of the deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Drop_Pod stairs.
  3. Use the laser pointer to tell Bosco what to mine, then stand underneath him and slightly behind and the materials will drop straight into your collection.
  4. Bosco can even mine and then will automatically carry buried items such as deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Alien_Egg (deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Egg_Hunt mission type) and deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Jadiz
or deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com – https://deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com/Aquarq chunks. Again just aim the laser pointer at the soil and fire.
  5. If Bosco is carrying a chunk or egg, if you press the ‘Shout’ key (<x> by default on PC) he will attempt to throw the item to you and you can catch it.
  6. If you’ve told Bosco to do something and you want him to come back, just press the ‘Shout’ key (<x> by default on PC).
  7. The game is paused when you go to the menu, only in solo play.
  8. Bosco has a number on his back – that’s the number of times he can revive you, and the number goes down each time you are revived so it lets you know how many revives are left.
  9. Bosco can target Doretta, making him stay near her and attack the closest enemies.
  10. For On-site Refining missions, Bosco can be instructed to build incomplete pipelines and fix broken pipelines in the same way you would tell him to mine/dig (use your laser pointer and ‘shoot’ the target).

And remember, if you don’t rock and stone, you’re not coming home.
