If you want to know if it’s worth playing Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, check out my review.
I was seven years old when I first played Jet Set Radio: Future on an original Xbox in an orange folding canvas camping chair that was both colorful and quite uncomfortable. I hadn’t noticed it at first, but I was unknowingly creating a critical memory with my controller placed down on the floor and chomping chips:
Beat stood frozen in the hustle and bustle of Rokkaku-dai Heights, listening to Scapegoat Wax’s “Aisle 10 (Hello Allison),” the sunset sun relentlessly beating down on him. After graduating and relocating, I uncovered Scapegoat Wax’s customer-service-inspired Jet Set Radio game on YouTube in 2010 and instantly formed a strong yearning for similar titles: true “flow state” games. Experience an immersive, styled urban atmosphere by skating, grinding, and performing great stunts – that experience has long eluded gifted individuals, but none had come as near as August 2023.
Team Reptile delivered with accuracy. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk encompasses everything a fan of this genre wants while being distinct. It’s obvious where this idea came from; those familiar with its origins would certainly recognize some familiar components inside it, but its inspirations have not been directly replicated.
Although its structure appears to be identical, its design reveals years of game design skill in this genre, drawing inspiration from extreme sports titles as well as attractive platformers. Your hosts realize why and for what purpose you’ve come; nonetheless, they will not aggressively wink and nod at you during your trip, demanding acceptance at every turn. They respect you enough to give an experience you’ll enjoy while also telling you to “do your thing.” Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a fun game in and of itself; I could play it for hours! (In fact, this could be one of the most satisfying video game experiences I’ve had in a long time!) My only regret is that I had to go so quickly!
While you can never truly return home, the perfect team of developers, artists, and musicians can make it feel like it.
