Content of the guide: Game tips. Scenarios walkthroughs and tips. 100% achievement guide.

General Information

You can get all achievements (except those 4 related scenarios and Misery Loves Company) in one game with the following game settings:
Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
BUT:
-it is advised to play the tutorial first, at least to a point where you can repair the ship, then the spacehip
-It is important to leave pollution on normal and not turn on starting pollution for one achievement.
-it is very important to NOT demolish any forest until you repair spaceship, else you need a new game for one achievement

Perfection time: ~70-100hours, could be faster if you skip the tutorial playthrough, as that is a full game with hints and task you should do as next.
100% difficulty: 4/10. This is a game which require time instead of skill, with the exception of the Getting busy and Apocalypse scenarios. There you have to use the available continents properly in first and on second you need to play under a challenging time pressure. The repapir ship and shaceship within 15/90mins is the only other challenge left, but with the previous difficulty settings you could do them very easily.

Bugged Achievements

On current version (1.0238) 2 achievements are bugged/not obtainable:

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Apocalype Soon
Complete the Apocalypse Soon scenario

Scenario Bugged, cant finish it because of vanishing resources. Will be fixed in next patch. (source: discord and developer comments on steam)

7 Horizons
Colonise 7 Planets in 1 game

Achievement not unlocks after colonizing the 7th planet. Will be fixed in next patch. (source: discord and developer comments on steam)

Biomes and related achievement

The game has 6 different continent types. Resources, you can find on them is random, so you can find vegtable, tea, oil, etc on all of them randomly.

Grassland

Nothing special about this continent type, you can do anything on it effectively.

Pros: Ultimate continent to do anything here
Cons: None

Desert

As I said resources are random on each continent types, desert is still different a bit. This continent type if the only source for sands, which required for many things, like Glass.
Most part of the continent is dead, only a small area available for producing food/water or plant forest, so a good place to build up industry, but require supply of food in case of a bigger population.

Pros: Access to sand resource, good place to build up industry
Cons: Limited areas for food/water production

Rainforest

My favorite food supply region. Fields get a huge bonus on rainforest. that bonus decreasing if you cut out too many trees, but it is still easy to maintain 100% bonus with 15-20 fields while building the hourses and other buildings on the mountains. A good Rainforest continent could feed 2 planets. If you continue with the deforestation, then the bonus will decrease and eventually it will became a penalty instead.

Pros: Insane food/tea production speed
Cons: Can’t expand a lot on this continent.

Snow

My least favorite continent type and i keep these usually small. Citizens on snow continents get tired much faster so they spending most of their days with sleeping and napping. Creating good clothing for them solves the issue.

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Freezing, lazy workers, they will do proper production only when clothing delivered.

Swamp

Another mostly annoying continent. You can’t build big or heavy buildings on it. You can’t upgrade houses to aparments, no heavy industry, no warehouses!. Those still could be built on mountain areas, but usually that area is quite small on these continents (based on my expriences).

Pros: Nothing or only one: if still need some resources produced because can be found only on snow or swamp continents, than still better to build it here. Most of the time i used for milk producing.
Cons: Can’t build warehouses, sometimes need 3-5 ports to effectively collect and load resources to ships as because of no warehouse the port workers need to collect all resources from the production buildings.

Crystal

A specific biome available only on your starter planet and need to unlock it. How to unlock it check Who put that there? achievement information.

Pros: Access to crystals and yellow research technologies, invisible until island discovered.
Cons: No food/water production here at all.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Variety is the Spice of Life
Colonise Islands of all 6 biomes and have a population of at least 50 Peeps on each of them

This is a rare achievement, mostly because players have no clue how to unlock the Crystal continent. Other than that easy, have 50 population on each biome in one single game. Don’t forget to ship food to your citizens on the Crystal biome:-D

Buildings, adjacency and production bonuses

Nearly each building could receive bonuses or penalties based on what building placed next to them, or based on other factors, so let me explain it with a picture:

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

The red marked area on building tooltip shows what bonuses or penalties could a building receive.

The green marked area shows the active bonuses or penalties.

On this picture you can see the farm/field setting I like to use. Each 5 farm connected to a well (orange connection lines), so each farm gets a 10% production bonus. There are at least one building next to each farm too (lightblue connection lines), so they will get another 10% production bonuses.

There are enough space to build everything, so why to care about these bonuses? Well, if citizens need walk more to get their daily needs then they will work less.

This was just an example, ALL buildings could receive bonus, so don’t forget to check the bonuses when planing your city construction.

UNLESS

you playing on a rainforest continent. The bonus you get from the continent itself is much better than trying to place extra buildings/roads on the ground. You can still get extra bonuses there, like placing the farm at the edge of the mountain and placing houses next to them, at the top of the mountain.

Not enough technology/resources…

Can’t happen, there are still many posts about it.

With resources might happen, that you colonized a new planet, you not built a spaceport yet so can’t deliver resources there and you feel so that you got stuck:

  • demolishing other buildings will give you back 100% of the building materials, now get that tools and use it for the proper buildings:-D

Some encounter issues there are not enough tech around to discover everything, perhaps could happen in game with only 3 planets.

  • Explore ancient ruins, you could get not researched techologies as reward…or a minotaur for the continent:-D
  • Build submarines. Submarines finds a lot of technology resources when exploring underwater ruins

Resource managment… How to reserve resources?

It is a common problem that users try to deliver some resources to other planets/continents and it just don’t want to arrive. Mostly because those are consumable items and the consumption of the citizens are higher than the amount of the production. The game helps you with that:

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

Just select the desired resource (red marked areas) in this case it is fruits. Now you will see 1 or 2 sliders. (green marked area) One slider is always available, that is restricting citizens to use it and the resource could be used only for production and transportation. The second slider available only if the resource could be used in as material in other building. To explain the numbers on the picture: 163 fruits available on the planet, 20 reserved for transporting or construction and additional 50 reserved for production buildings.

Important: These settings affect the islands where you doing it, you need to set your desired values on every single island.

Space Whales and related achievements

SPACE WHALES

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

There are more than one Space Whale type in the game and there are multiple ways to defend against them. They are different not just in their size, but in the destruction too, what they leaving behind them.

When will they attack:

Unless they disabled in the difficulty settings, they will start to be active quite some time after you built your first spaceship and colonized your second planet. Then one will arrive from time to time and target one of your planet.

A planet not, or less likely to be targeted if:
-only one continent colonized
-no spaceport on the planet

Space whales will target the planet ALWAYS, when you built a Whale Charmer on it.

Small Space Whale

The small one is a space whale which easy to neutralize. While they could destroy many of your buildings or eat your citizens, it is still quite easy to defend your colony against them.

These Methods are:

  • Space elevator and feed them with foods
  • build a bunker and hide your citizens there, your buildings still could be destroyed
  • Build Aegis (Planetary shields) on the continent to protect the continent, or on all continents to defensd the whole planet.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Feed The Beast
Prevent a Whale attack with a Space Elevator

Once built a space elevator you need to carry foods there, which is done by the workers automatically. The next time a small space whale targeting the planet with the space elevator, it will just consume the foods collected to that building, leaving the structure of the planet, buildings and citizens untouched.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Back to the Bunker
Hide all Peeps on a Planet in Shelters during a Whale attack

Now this is protecting your citizens from both Space Whale type, but the Space Whale will feed from the planet, so the least effective way. Still, you need to protect all of your citizens once for the achievement on a planet targeted by a space whale. Please be sure, you have bunker (researched near the end of the tech tree) on all your continents and don’t forget to turn off space elevator.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Fortified
Fully protect a Planet with a Shield

Aegis is the most effective way to protect against Space Whales. Once built on all continents the planet is fully protected.
Aegis workers gets a lot penalties to happiness because of gloom and work difficulty. If you connected your Aegis to your power supply network then these workers just idling there and still getting these penalties, so dont forget to lock them out. No workers required with power supply connection:

Environmental Protection Agency
Maintain a full Shield for 1 in-game hour around a Planet with only Wind and Solar generators

And once you already protecting your planet with shields already, make sure there are only solar or wind energy available on your planet. Those are the best anyway:-)

Big Space Whales

They are rare. Very rare. You don’t want any to come for your planet which don’t have Aegis shields. That is the only protection against them. They not just demolishing a good part of your planet, buy they leave a big, 3*3 size Astrobelanium mountain behind. You dont want that to be at the middle of you planetary capital, could ruin your whole supply chain and your production line. If that is not enough, one more hex around it permanently get “Very highly polluted” pollution.

Whale Charmer

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
A Whole New World
Finish the game

Whale Charmer is the ultimate building which actually makes you to win the game. It is a very expensive building and it has 5 additional upgrades. Once you built the first level of it, Space Whales always target the planet with the Whale Charmer on it. From now on, you need to maintain the Aegises only on the planet with the Whale Charmer and big whales could be more common, just as each upgrade make whale attacks more common. Well, you have your Aegis right? Then you have nothing to be afraid of.

Survivalist Plus
Survive 100 Whale Attacks across all games

This game has a few grind oriented achievements. Survive 1/20/100 whale attacks is one of them. Don’t be afraid. Just build up your whale charmer to the max-1 level, so avoid the final upgrade, make sure you have your Aegis running and the power supply safe (enough for it even if with the weather randomity if weather not turned off at difficulties, or during night when supplied with solar panels) and you can just idle that game with max speed, as you probably still won’t have 100 once done with all scenarios and all other achievements.

Guardians and taming

Gremlins

Gremlins are little thieves. You can find their building on many continents, more then one available in each game, similar to the building on their related achievement:

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Debug Mode
Tame a Gremlin Nest

To tame ityou literally don’t need to do anything about them. The easiest guardians to tame. If you do something against them(light tower building), then you will not get the achievement:-)

Just let them continuesly steal resources from your warehouses, production buildings and eventually they will show up, telling that they feel bad about stealing soo many things from you.

Bonus once tamed: Gremlins now fills up your warehouses and production buildings with resources.

Minotaur

This is a very annoying Guardian. You can find ancient ruins on planets you can explore by sending a citizen to there:

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

Sometimes they unlock a new research for you, sometimes they offer a background, lore information about the world before the apocalypse and sometimes a minotaur will emerge. That could happen more than once in the solar system, so just because you found one and tamed it, another ancient ruin still could release one.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Heart of the Labyrinth
Tame a Minotaur

To tame ityou need build a training ground on the continent terrorized by the minotaur. Once the building fully upgraded your wrestlers there always beat the minotaur and after the minotaur lost like 6-10 times from a fully upgraded training ground the minotaur will give up and join you.

Bonus once tamed: He will help with resources delivers from one building to another.

Sphinx

The most unique guardian, which available only once in each game. You will eventually encounter a continent where there is a strange structure on the mountainous area. It looks like a building with a turret on it. Now this turret will target your buildings once you colonised that continent.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Riddle Master
Tame a Sphinx

To tame it you need to build a museum on the affected continent and fully upgrade it. The museum upgrades require technology resources, which stored in the libraries, each type, expect yellow will be required for a full upgrade. Once you have a fully upgraded museum the workers there always will know the answers for the riddles of the Sphinx, so it wont punish you with destroying your buildings.

Bonus once tamed: A huge energy output which means you wont need any power source on that continent. It could easily supply an Aegis and additional industries on the island.

Kraken

Every planet has one kraken but how to find it? Now for that you need to build submarines!

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

Once you have one (i would use more than one) submarine (red marked unit) you need to use their explore command (orange marked area) on sunken ruins, ship, etc (green marked object as an example). This way you will find extra resources… and Kraken tentacles. Once it released the Krake will terrorize your waters. Grabbing ships making your supply chains suffer as ships grabbed for a few minutes.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Heart of the Ocean
Tame a Kraken

To tame ityou need to find all 6 tentacle (light blue marked area, but only 5 there yet) to tame it. To ensure the safety resource flow you might want to change to airships once the technology available.

Bonus once tamed: +20% ship speed on the planet

Scenarios

Apocalypse Soon

Because of the vanishing resources bug on the scenario this part of the guide will be updated after the next patch

Time pressure during the scenario and you can’t waste any second here, probably the most challenging part if you want to go for 100% achievements.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Apocalype Soon
Complete the Apocalypse Soon scenario

Seed Hunter

A very casual scenario. You need to explore ancient ruins (like on the picture at the tame the minotaur achievement). In this scenario you will need to find all different seeds, then produce them and deliver 100 from each to your starter island. Yes, you might need to do the resource reservation at the “Resource managment… How to reserve resources?” tab of the guide so citizens won’t consume those not produced on that island.

No time pressure, very easy scenario, doable with relaxed gameplay and don’t even need to go far in research tree. Just go to islands/planets, colonise, check the ruins and deliver the seeds. Steel/glass/fuel are the top resources you need for all these.

Hut-Owners Association

A scenario with default ending, so you need to build and upgrade the whale charmer. The difficulty of the scenario is, that citizens will work only in those building placed next to them and you cant place houses next to each other. So the citizens will work when placed like this:

No time pressure, could be finished easily, so an easy scenario.

Getting Busy

Normally, you get bonus population once you built school and you have free space in one of your houses. In getting Busy scenario the population increases automatically, even if no free spots in houses and that happens on every single colonised continent/island. So once you got your second island now it start increasing there too.

Challenging mission to make everyone happy, feed everyone and also house everyone. You can’t colonise additional planets, 5+1 continents available (6th is the crystal, so 1 from each biome) so this one focusing on proper placement of buildings and using the available spaces as good as possible.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

If you have difficulties with it then there is an exploit on game version 1.0238 (active version on 25th May 2021) for this scenario. Somehow you can revert games to old depots version and install this version later, but i actually don’t know exactly how this works as i always playing actual version of games. The exploit is:

You can overwrite the setting of this scenario. Start a regular new game, without pollution, setting the peps expectation to maximum 120, building costs to minimum, starter resource to maximum. Start that game, return to main menu and start the scenario. Now instead of the original, expected settings the setting you used for that custom game will be active on the scenario.

Now this is something you will miss probably, here are some ideas how to get more citizens “created”

  • Idle getting busy scenario, eventually it will get to the 200sad citizens and fail, but that 200 count for the counter. It will be slow tho, as population surplus generated only on one island.
  • Idle last part of getting busy scenario. I was done with all supply chain, all building on the scenario, there were the homes too for the upcoming citizens when my total count was only at 700. As the i had 5 colonized islands, on each the new citizens creation was ongoing automatically. Reloaded that same 3 times so i got 3*300 while i was cooking:-)
  • you will probably create extra spaceships so combine this with 100spacewhale attack survive. Whenever you check you pc just Move citizens from planet to spaceships (or regular ships) from an area which heavily populated but dont require a lot of worker (could be the 300+ rainforest island too) so the schools can do their jobs

Not sure you will get 200 ships by playing normally so when you already finished all scenarios and your regular game, then just load that one, build 4-5 shipwrights and spam create the cheapest exploration ship. During Getting Busy Scenario it is also a good way to reduce unwanted citizens early at the game with creating some extra ships.

Use a Transmogrifier

Jesus, need to waste 15 woods to make 5 tools 200 times maunally? Good news! No. Once you explored the crystal island (check secret achievements parts), you will have access to new, secret technologies. This will allow you to build new transmogifiers with more recipes. I personaly used the one which transfers fruits into milk. The milk was consumed by the population, fruit was constantly delivered to the island so the achievement unlocked easily while i was just playing.

Missable/Tricky achievements

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide - Missable/Tricky achievements
Smooth Sailing
Repair the Ship in 15 in-game minutes

This is something you wont get on your first run, and this is why i suggested in the first section of the guide to do tutorial first at least until ship+spaceship repair. Changing difficulties, and setting the building cost to “Quarter” makes this achievement relativly easy, you will still be at 13-14 mins probably. Not doable with enabled tutorial because of many additional researches and things you need to do there.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Let’s Get Off This Rock
Repair the Spaceship in 90 in-game minutes

Just like the timed ship repair, the spaceship got one too. Now with the same building cost setting for your game this is actually a trivial one, as that way you could get this done easily at the 60th minute.

One with Nature
Repair Spaceship without ever demolishing a Forest

In the first section of the guide i said that i suggest to play tutorial at least until spaceship repair and never demolish a forest until then. Now this is the reason why. Woodcutters NOT demolishing forests, you can have that building, just dont use the tractor icon on forests.

Utopia
Have one Island with 200+ Peeps, all happy and housed

I remember for an american show where civilians were asked to name countries starting with U. Sadly, noone mentiones Unites States:-D but there were some Utopia. So let’s create that world then! With proper difficulty settings it is not hard at all, if peps expectations set to 120, then at 200 population you will have only -1 happy modifier because of amount of citizens, so with fruit/vegetable + tea your whole island will be happy in case of no pollution. Could be done while aiming for Metropolis.

Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide
Metropolis
Have one Island with 300+ Peeps on it, all with homes

Feeding 300 citizens on the same island is not an easy task, but far from impossible. I suggest you to do on a planet which has a rainforest island, so you can produce a lot of food/drink for your Metropolis. If you actually find a quite big rainforest island, then you could do a self sufficient island with that population, like i done mine, because the fields still had +54% bonus while maintained 300+ populations:

We Don’t Need No Education
Have 100 Peeps on an Island without ever building a School there

You can get new population with school, so how to do that? Get a ship/airship and deliver there citizens manually! Choose an island, never build a school there and deliver population to there:
Before We Leave Tips - Game and 100% Achievement Guide

Go to a port, click on the peps icon and transfer citizens to the ship, now go to the destination island/port and click on unload cargo, thats it, once population on 100 on destination island the achievement unlocks:-)

The Taste Of Home
50+ Peeps, all happy, on an inner or outer Planet Island, fed with only potatoes and water

To make it clear, all need to live on water and potato at the same time. This not means that they were not allowed to eat/drink other stuffs previously, as colony ships might arrive with different woods. So just start producing potato and water, raise population to 50+ and this will unlock sooner or later. Just dont transfer better food/drink to that island BUT transfer something else which increase their happiness, like clothing or jewelry.

Radioactive
Finish the game without ever building a cleaner

Simple, just never build any cleaner building. If you missed this, play another sandbox game without pollution and you probably wont ever think about to build one:-)

Holiday Resort
Have 100+ Peeps, all happy and housed, on an Island that’s never had fields or Extractor, Industry or Quality of Life buildings on it

You will need to deliver foods and drink to there. Their happiness guaranteed if these are not water or potato. Just build only houses and deliver the citizens (or use shool, but could combine it with We dont need education achievement) and consumables there.

Have all Peeps wearing Good Clothing

An easy, but tricky achievement. A good clothing used by one of your citizen will degrade to regular clothing, then to another lower quality and that is the point when the citizen picking up a new one. You cant do this while having only one island and with multiple island while delivery/transportation included it is not possible to have all citizen having good clothing at the same time.
Delive good clothing to all islands BUT dont let citizens to use them, reserve those for transportation by the way it is exaplaing in the “Resource managment… How to reserve resources?” section of the guide. Once you have population + 1 good clothing on all your islands (and all of your citizens in rags, really if they used any clothing in the past wait a lot first) pause and set back the sliders to zero so everyone will pick up good clothing and everyone will have that at the same time.

What did I step in?
Have a Planet with every Island tile polluted (apart from tiny islands), with default pollution difficulty settings

A boring and time consuming achievement. Select a planet which dont have swamp continent. You can build heavy buildings on it so harder and even more time consuming to pollute it. In the first section of the guide i said you should leave pollution settings untouched, this achievement is the reason.
The way i did: Build Aegis on the islands on that planet, but fuel it up with Oil Generators. Ageis require a lot of power so those generators will run a lot. Oil generators pollute neighbouring hexes to 3 hex distances. Turn off the oil generators you dont need anymore, and slowly pollute every single tile on the big continents. Small islands not required. Slightly polluted level enough for the achievement, so make sure your food production tiles affected only by that and keep the population low on that planet. At the overlays you can check the pollution level easily:

Misery Loves Company

The reason that this achievement get a separate tab is not because it is sooo specific, but character limits not allowed me to place into the Missable/Tricky achievement section:-)

Have 100+ Peeps in a game, all of them Very Sad

The problem with this achievement is, that you need to have ALL of your citizen to be very sad. I said in the first section of the guide that you can’t do this and the 4 scenario related in one sandbox game. Well, you actually could do it there, but as we set the pep expectations to 120 there at the settings, it could be much harder. Don’t be afraid, no separate game required, you could get this one easily while working on the Hut-Owners Association Scenario.
Easiest way to lose happiness on every single citizen if the island overpopulated and reached the first expectations rank. You could say, well, that is easy then, but you can’t reach very sad status until Tinkering technology isn’t researched yet and by that time you will have 4-5 islands.
During the scenario the first pep expectations reached at 60 populations so here is the steps i done during the Hut scenario:

  • research Tinkering
  • play regularly as you would but don’t colonize new islands, so upgrade your fields, replace power plants to solar/wind, etc
  • now you want to save your game as you want to return to this point
  • increase the population to 61+ on each island
  • forbid them to use tea or any better drink they use. If no better drink than water used on that island you can already forbid them the use of food, if that food is not potato (reserve the items for transportation as it was explained in the appropriate section of the guide)
  • if an island used any drink better than water, then now wait until citizens have water as their last uses drink (weird bug, that if citizens hungry they not losing previous drink bonus, so a single citizen with tea bonus can ruin this, if that happens just enable food resource useage again until the bonus wears off), then forbid the use of the foods with happiness bonus
  • wait, and the achievement should be yours

Secret Achievements

There are 3 secret, hidden achievements in the game.

Who put that there?
Destroy a Ship by creating crystal Island under it

On your starter planet there will be a sunken ruin covered by crystals. You need to explore that with a submarine to make the crystal island to emerge. Before doing that, save your game. Now check where the island will emerge, reload your game and send a ship to there and expolore it again.

Click on a frog

You simply need to click on a frog. They supposed to be rare, but there should be one in every single game on one of the swamp islands, at least this was the case for me so far:

Lose 20+ buildings in one whale attack

Might sound easy, but if you know what you doing then you won’t get this achievement regularly or accidently. A proper way to still make it happen:

  • fully protect a planet with Aegis
  • build whale charmer, so always that planet will be attacked. Upgrade it but avoid max level
  • build up every single island to max, preferably one hex size buildings so you will have more
  • when a whale is coming, save your game
  • disable the shields and space elevator!!!
  • shout WHALECUM for better RNG, because the whale still could hit the oceans, instead of the islands.
  • If it still hit the islands you should have more than 20
  • If you not had 20 destroyed building because most of the hit was to the ocean, then reload your game and wait for the next whale, dont try with the same whale again, the damage based on its arrival ankle so the same whale wont deliver different damage

When you build up those islands completly (dont need to be active buildings, you can deactivate them):

then you can expect something like this if the space whale not hitting the ocean:

  1. I just completely finished the game I guess with the whale charmer being fully upgraded, but it says to continue playing or follow the whale. In the written part it says the peeps must go alone so it won’t even allow me to select to follow the whale. Do you have any suggestions?
