This will cover hints and tips on:
* First Building, Storage Areas and Priority
* Policy Edits
* Group Creation and Assignments.
* Food Preservation methods
* Tribe Happiness
* Migration
First Building, Storage Areas and Priority
* Storage areas with priority and activation of Gathering.
Pause Game. Find a spot where you would like to settle , and start with placing a Fireplace, priority 4. Keep game paused while you are creating other storage areas as well.
Allocate each food type an open storage area and place all to priority 4.
Make sure you have ticked in Continuous Production for each of the storage areas.
Create 5 new storage areas: Reeds, Straw, Sticks, Ropes and Plant-Fibre. Priority 3 for now on all but the Plant-Fibre, give it 4. You can up the priority on others as you need, or lower it if you do not need, or if you’re over-producing.
You can now add the rest of the resources you need a storage area for. There are 14 resources besides the ones covered that needs a storage area. Create as small or as big an area as you feel is needed.
Food needs 10.
2nd prio mats need 5
Remaining needs 14.
Total amount of storage areas needed at start = 29
Policy Edits
* Policy Edits
Your Work Policies will contribute to your Tribes Happiness and Efficiency with how things are being done in the Tribe, and it can make or break your tribe.
* Work Hours
Try to leave Work-Hours on default to start with, you can change this pending on either happiness and/or over-production of resources.
* Work Age
Place Work-Age at 1 rank below All Ages. You now have the very young and the ones over 65-ish chilling out rather than working. As the tribe grows to a much larger size you can allow more age-groups to not work, or if you over-produce resources, by moving the slider another notch to the left.
* Rations
Avoid lowering the Rations too much unless you have imminent famine incoming, and then for only a short amount of time as it will make everyone unhappy. Prolonged rationing, pending on level, can in the end lead to disease and death.
Having to ration your food on a regular basis indicates you might be doing something wrong, or you have landed on a bad locality.
Group Creation and Assignments.
* Group Creation and Assignments.
* Toolmaker
You do not need more than 1 Tool maker, tick in all tools and place fishing and hunting tools on priority 3.
* Fishermen
Employ only 1-2 fishermen to start with, calculate roughly 1 per 10 members until you reach 50-80+ members. At that point most thumb-rules for avoiding over-fishing and hunting is often out of the window. If you are over-fishing at the start, pause fishermen and/or lower fish rank in storage area.
Over-fishing can be checked by the Rot-Circle around the resource. If it is around halfway to full circle , you can afford to slow down on fishing, especially in Summer as plant food will be available in normally large amounts. The Rot Indicator can be used for all resources.
* Food Gatherers
Assign approximately 2-3 as a start, up as tribe grows.
Tick in all food types to be gathered.
* Material Gatherer
Add 2 for this task at the start, tick in all types of materials, except the one you do not wish to focus on.
* Solo-Group for Plant-fibre Gathering OPTIONAL
Add 1 person to this group, and tick in only plant-fibre. Feel free to lasso in with free-hand tool the Cat-Tails or Nettles you wish for this group to focus on. Add more people if you need more Fibre, or place the priority lower if you’re over producing.
* Hunters
Allow 1 Hunter during Spring and Summer unless you have too little fish or Plant produce, then add as many as you need and also max out what prey to focus on. Otherwise, leave Prey size on Default till late autumn, then up Hunters to 2-4 and allow hunting on all sizes. Remember to bring conservation back to default during Spring and Summer so replenishment can happen. There will also be prey migrating in and/or out from your area. Add more hunters as your tribe grows. You can also start with 2 Hunters if the area has all 3 Prey types, as the area can afford it without hunting to extinction.
Food Preservation methods
* Food Preservation methods
* Driers
Create a Drier for each raw food that can be dried, 1 for Fish and 1 for Meat.
Grant all Driers Rank 4. All priority rank 4 items will be repaired quickly if the mats and free people are available.
* Pits
Assign Pits is for all Plant produce you are gathering, and make sure you create more than 1 per product as the tribe grows. This to avoid all standing in a long line to help themselves from 1 Pit.
Grant all priority 4.
* Baskets
Create Baskets for all animal produce, such as Honey, Fish and Meat.
You will need 2 for Fish: 1 for raw, and 1 for dried, same for Meat. Honey only needs 1.
Grant all priority 4.
Tribe Happiness
* Tribe Happiness
Your Tribe Happiness is pending on several factors, among these are:
* Food, which can be adjusted in Policies , Rations.
* Tribe Health, which is a result from Rationing, Malnutrition, Work-hours, and Famine.
* Free Time, which can be adjusted in Policies, Work Hours.
* Quality Sleep, and in order to get quality sleep you need at least a Pelt Hut. The amount of Huts should be increased with your population.
* Personality Traits
Some personality traits are more prone to becoming unhappy, in particular the spineless trait that shows when a members Will is below 100. These personality Traits will only be happy if you lower the Work Hours, and sometimes they wont be happy even at 4 or 0 work hours.
The only time you should lower Work hours for happiness is if a disgruntled member feeling exploited is either pregnant or with a baby swaddled to her chest.
Lower it to 8 and she will slowly calm down to just feeling overworked. As soon as the child shows up as a member in the members-list, place Work-Hours back to 12. The disgruntled woman might leave, but her child will stay in the tribe.
The process from feeling overworked to actually leaving the tribe can take many years, so if you cannot afford to lower the hours till the child is showing up as a member, you can try to keep hours to 8 till she is only feeling overworked, then upping to 12 till she feels exploited again and then down to 8 again, basically jojo-ing the hours, and hope you wont lose her and the baby.
Migration
* Migration
In the Mesolithic Era, humans could not sustain any larger population due to i.e. lack of Agriculture, and this is where we are at the moment, so when you reach around 100 population it becomes extremely difficult to keep all members healthy and happy.
As your Tribe grows from 16 members, you will need more food for them, and when the food is gone from your initial starting locality, it is time to migrate.
This can happen within a year if you’re wasting food or if you have landed on a low produce spot.
If your landing spot is good you can however live at the same locality for several years.
However, no matter how much you micro-manage food and lessen waste, there will come a time when your locality will need a replenishment.
This is when you would wish to Migrate.
Pick if possible late autumn as you have harvested all plant produce in old locality and the new locality will be untouched and filled with produce for your tribe to gather.
When your tribe is having more than 50 members you will start migrating roughly every Spring and/or late autumn in order to be able to feed all your people.
Make sure to save your game in case you land on a poor spot, so you can reload and pick a new locality.
Re-do all the steps this Guide has taught you when you land, or experiment around till you find something that works better for you 🙂
